On taking a job in a rural Quebec hospital, Dr Pearson, a handsome but emotionally damaged Englishman, becomes the focus of the frustrated desires of the town’s women. Two beauties principally contend for him: Cora Laurent, the neurotic young wife of his elderly boss Dr Laurent, and the semi-crippled Denise Tourneur, in whose house he lodges. When anonymous letters implicating Pearson with Mme Laurent start circulating, the atmosphere in the little community becomes tense. After one recipient, a bedridden war hero who is one of Pearson’s patients, commits suicide, his nurse Marie Corbin, who is Cora’s estranged sister, is wrongfully arrested. The ex-soldier’s mother, Mme Gauthier, vows revenge. Laurent then tries to frame Denise but when confronted by Pearson, who has now started an affair with Denise, shifts the blame to his wife Cora. She is put in seclusion at the hospital, where she reveals to Pearson who instigated the letters. Mme Gauthier, who has almost certainly overheard, exacts her vengeance.
