There are un-cited opinions that do not reference back to published sources.

Notwithstanding, California had been slave-free since 1820, and was brought into the Union as a Free State (see Compromise of 1850). There may have been secessionists involved, but leaders of the movement, like Jefferson Hunt, of San Bernardino were not proponents of slavery.
