Tamil demographics edit

What source(s) should be used for counting Tamil Canadians when census disagrees with many sources 06:35, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Currently this article says there are 130,000. Somebody recently tried changing it to 300,000, but I reverted that.

The 130,000 figure seems to be an approximation of StatsCan's language figure for 2006, which is actually 138,675. But, this article is about ethnic origin, not language. For 2006, the ethnic origin number is a mere 34,590 (multiple response column). As explained in this opinion piece, there's a huge descrepancy between StatsCan, the community leaders, academics, and the media use. A figure of 200,000 was used by the Toronto Star for Toronto GTA alone. One of the sources we use Diversity Watch says "According to government figures, there are about 200,000 Tamils in Canada.". But the government doesn't say that. "Diversity Watch" selectively uses the exact StatsCan number for language (92,010 in 2001), but not ethnicity. If we use a non-StatsCan source, that source needs to properly explain how it gets its numbers. So, I would like some input on what sources and figures should be used. --Rob (talk) 06:36, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Rob, Toronto Star and Globe and Mail both have tried to come up with a solution to the question you have asked and left it unanswered because there is no one correct answer. As we are here not to state "fact"s but to relibly state what to others are saying, it is important to leave with the impression that actual data is not available. The estimates of ethnic populations in Canada will always be a crap shot with many not claiming that in the census but considering them as an hyphenated ethnic group anway in another survey. Not balanced article, Only shows positive side of the subject edit

What about LTTE related gangs in Canada? and other organized crimes such as ATM frauds, human smuggling and money forcibly collected for LTTE terrorism? This article seems to a one sided article which doesn't include the negative views related to Canadian tamil community. It only shows their positive side, but as a wiki article this should be a balanced article which includes both positive and negative sides related to the subject.

just the liberal wiki bias rearing its head again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.32.136.3 (talk) 02:12, 20 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
