Hiroki's reply edit

The article is grossly incorrect regarding what Hiroki's reply to the question Takako presents after her confession. When I watched the film, I was highly annoyed that the translation in the subtitles was incorrect, although the mistake is easy to make because of the way Japanese (and some other Asian languages) work when responding to negative questions. The dialogue went like this (didn't bother with the kanji for the names):

たかこ:ひろき、今、好きな子いる?
ひろき:ああっ
たかこ:あたしじゃないよね?
ひろき:違う

Translated into English by me:

Takako: Hiroki, do you have a girl you like/love at the moment?
Hiroki: Yeah
Takako: It's not me, right?
Hiroki: No, you're wrong.

That last line is where people have gone wrong. Responses いいえ, 違う etc. affirm the positive when a negative is used in a question. In this case, though, a correct interpretation could have been done solely on the grounds of 違う being unconditionally translatable into something indicating the assertion made in a previous statement is false. The semantics of negative responses to negative questions/assertions would not even have to be considered.

In any case, from the dialogue alone the only possible correct interpretation is that Hiroki likes/loves Takako. The way the scene continues only reinforces this interpretation. I will correct the article. 80.248.254.68 (talk) 23:25, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
