Talk:Table Rock (North Carolina)

Previous altitude given was incorrect. The altitude can be gotten from numerous maps which confirm that the altitude is below 4,000 feet. My source for 3940 feet is at this address: http://lgmaps.org/maps/lgnet/LGW20170403.jpg Landrumkelly (talk) 21:05, 26 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The previous citation of the altitude of 4100 feet was from Summitpost.org. This was definitely an error--and the error remains on that site: http://www.summitpost.org/table-rock/185534 Again, from map readings and common knowledge, this mountain does not reach 4,000 feet. The precise area cannot be determined from maps, but the figure of 3940 feet is probably accurate to within twenty feet, plus or minus.Landrumkelly (talk) 21:26, 26 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Another source cites the altitude as 3930 feet. https://www.romanticasheville.com/table_rock_mountain.htm Again, this figure falls within the margin of error given above (3940 feet, plus or minus 20 feet). The precise altitude cannot be determined from the available data.Landrumkelly (talk) 22:31, 26 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The altitude of the summit remains in dispute, although there is surely some official record somewhere. The sign on the Table Rock Mountain overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway says 3909 feet. It is impossible to say from this source or from topographic maps exactly what the altitude is. There is also some continuing discrepancy as to what is the vertical distance to the summit from Table Rock Parking, with high-end figures being 600 feet, and low-end figures being 550 feet. The problem on that issue is verifying not only the altitude of the summit but also the altitude of the parking area. These are not major issues, but it would be good if someone could get official data on these altitudes. LandrumkellyLandrumkelly (talk) 18:27, 9 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
