I read somewhere a while ago that some modern hard drives may no longer honour a 'sync' call properly; i.e. the OS flushes all of its pending writes to disk, but the disk doesn't obey the call to flush all of its internal memory buffer to disk also. This can make power outages more likely to cause problems, as the OS may rely on its last regularly scheduled sync call having done what it was supposed to. The only article I could find about this was http://www.jasonbrome.com/blog/archives/2004/04/03/writecache_enabled.html , but I don't think that's the one I was thinking of. 96.50.106.54 (talk) 02:26, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

This article conflates several related and overlapping topics: sync; fsync; and fdatasync. I think a better job could be done of keeping them distinct and making sure they aren't confused. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alan.A.Mick (talkcontribs) 20:47, 16 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
