Dedication

... an offstage piano enters with Leopold Godowsky's transcription of Isaac Albéniz's Tango in D - a tribute to the concert pianist, a friend of Corigliano, to whom this symphony is dedicated.

Comment:

• Any reasonable person would take that on face value and believe that the "concert pianist" in question was Leopold Godowsky, who was a renowned concert pianist. That is, until we realise that Godowsky died in November 1938, when Corigliano was exactly 9 months old, which makes it rather hard for them to have been friends. So, who's it referring to?

• Daniel Barenboim conducted the premiere, and he also happens to be a concert pianist although he mainly conducts these days; so maybe it refers to him. But why he should be obliquely referred to as "the concert pianist" here, when his role was that of conductor, completely escapes me. • • Here the composer does not identify the pianist, but just refers to him as "my pianist-friend". He also says he dedicated the work to three musician friends who died of AIDS, not just to the the pianist.

Missing in action

Only the first movement is addressed. The other three aren't even listed. Somebody should remedy this. Also, readily available information like performance duration, found in many such entries, should be added. Opus131 (talk) 01:21, 29 June 2019 (UTC)
