I'm one of the original Swarm Developers. This page lists an "Initial Release" of Swarm in 1997, but the software was running usefully and given to other researchers as early as summer 1995 (or before?). I believe there was a formal 1.0 release some time, perhaps 1997, but a lot of widely distributed code long before. Maybe these days we'd call that a "beta".
