Article location

(Copying and amending my comments from: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (schools)#The UK thing where the general naming conventions for locating articles on schools are being discussed.)

A Google search for Sutton High School also finds Sutton High Sports College in St Helens in the UK, two Sutton High Schools in the US - one in Massachusetts and the other in Nebraska, Sutton District High School in Canada, and that's just in the first ten hits. None of these can make a claim that "Sutton High" overwhelmingly refers to them. So what disambiguator do we move this article to?

The website is actually rather vague on where it is, mainly using just "Sutton", but both the further information page and the Admissions page use "Sutton, Surrey" as the postal address. But neither of these are prominent (and "Sutton, Surrey" is a hangover from when the Royal Mail required a county in addresses and wouldn't update the ones in London - see Postal counties of the United Kingdom).

Sutton itself is a disambigution page. The relevant town is at Sutton, London whilst the borough is the London Borough of Sutton. So do we have:

1). Sutton High School (Surrey)?

2). Sutton High School (London)?

3). Sutton High School (Sutton, London)?

4). Sutton High School (London Borough of Sutton)?

5). Sutton High School (GDST)?

6). Sutton High School (Girls' Day School Trust?

5). & 6). are utterly meaningless to anyone without an idea as to what the GDST is. 3). feels like repetitive overkill, but is in line with the article on the town is. 4). is in line with the borough but feels strange. 1). might reflect where the school thinks it is, but frankly that's only a mailing address. 2). is the metropolis.

There's been no comment so I'm inclined to move the article to Sutton High School (London), in line with the school naming convention emerging (including dropping repetition of place names). This is also inline with Sutton railway station (London). Timrollpickering 01:11, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Surrey

As the layout of the infobox makes "county" appear as part of the address, and as the conventional postal address for the school (on website etc) is "Surrey", I think Surrey should remain. Yes, I know Royal Mail don't need it, but it's the commonly-used postal address. I added the small note to clarify the situation, and would like to replace it, but rather than get into edit wars let's discuss it here. PamD 10:13, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

It's easier to avoid it all together, not least because as Surrey shows, Sutton is no longer within its borders. Probably the best is not to use a county at all - Sutton Council have a policy to never use it and give all addresses as Sutton SM2... Timrollpickering 10:17, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

I've removed this altogether as neither county are part of the correct postal address. Also, the note contained incorrect information: 1974 boundary changes did not affect London. MRSC • Talk 14:45, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

You're right, 1965 is the date - comes of having lived a long time in West Yorkshire where 1974 is the date it all changed! Sorry about that.

The infobox gives "location", not postal address, so London Borough of Sutton is correct. The information about the school's preferred postal address, as it is described here, is also correct and potentially helpful. I am replacing this information, though I'd be delighted if the UK school infobox could be tweaked to make it easier to display it clearly and accurately. PamD (talk) 15:27, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

What evidence is there that the address is the school's "preferred" one? When I looked through the website to find a decent disambiguation tag I found most instances of "Surrey" were somewhat tucked away on addresses (and let's not forget that the 1996 changes to the postal system that removed the absolute need for a county were not especially widely noticed) and the school was otherwise not using "Surrey" to say where it is. Well that's a given postal address but then pre 1996 that address would have had to have had "Surrey" in it and even since then someone's use of "Surrey" doesn't always mean an explicit choice - many carry on using the same address, not least because the Royal Mail changes weren't that widely noted. Where is Sutton High using "Surrey" outside of a standard address that hasn't changed in years? Timrollpickering (talk) 16:58, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Frances West after whom one of the houses is named

Who is/was she? Is/was she someone better known by a different (married or professional) name? I emailed the school office a while ago to ask but have had no reply! Does anyone know? PamD 18:14, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
