Kosen is 5.78 cm shorter than 242 cm tall Zhang Juncai —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.11.208.17 (talk) 23:05, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Except Zhang Juncai has not been officially measured so that comment is unsubstantiated. 59.167.42.2 (talk) 01:21, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Too bad... edit

Wow, he's actually pretty cute. But too bad he walks with two canes and limps! *sigh* One would u anigaaaaaaaaaat he looks rather frail :-(

I believe that looking or being frail is actually fairly common for people over 7 foot 7. (230 cm) Usually being that tall relates to a pituitary or other ailment. Sandy Allen ended up in a wheelchair and Julius Koch had to have his legs amputated.--T. Anthony (talk) 23:46, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actuelly he is a Kurd no Turk from east anatolia mardin were i came from —Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.68.110.25 (talk) 15:09, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

There is a reason why humans don't grow above a certain height. Your body organs only work well when they are in certain proportions.

f

For one thing, as someone gets taller, there is more weight on his hips and ankles, so he's more likely to have leg problems. If somebody has fdfngjonjnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnndftwice the height of a normal person, he has twice as much weight on each square inch of his ankles. It's like going around all day with another person sitting on your shoulders.
The longest nerves in the body are the ones that reach from the brain to the end of the legs. They're also the first to go with many common diseases of aging. So he's more likely to have nerve problems.
His blood has to return from his lower legs back to his heart. The veins in his legs have valves to hold pressure while the heart beats. These valves wear out with age even in normal people, which is why they develop varicose veins. Someone twice as tall has twice as much pressure.
His heart has to pump blood to his head along arteries that are much longer than ordinary arteries, which requires more pressure. I think that most people who are very tall from these diseases usually die because the valves of their heart can't take it.
This isn't just a bizarre story, it's a medical story and it teaches a lot about biology. If we could find a WP:RS to say this, we should add it. --Nbauman (talk) 16:04, 14 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Basketball edit

One old ref referred to him as basketball player but that is not mentioned in the current media reports. The video does look like he would not be able to play anyway. Maybe he did play though when he was younger (the ref was from 2005 and might have referred back in time from then) and not as tall (his growth stopped in 2008). Maybe worth investigating once sources appear. Agathoclea (talk) 09:18, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sultan Kosen is Not the Tallest Man the World Has Seen edit

The tallest man in the world actually has 10 inches on Sultan Kosen. His name was Robert Wadlow and he passed away in 1940. A link to an article listing him as the tallest man in the world (according to the Guinnes Book of World Records) is below.

I believe the Living part of "Tallest Living Man" adequately explains the distinction between Wadlow and Kosen. Manning (talk) 00:03, 26 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Picture? edit

I have to interject here, surely the world's tallest man deserves a better picture on Wikipedia? He's been photographed numerous times by Guiness, and surely these photos of professional grade are better than the current, pixelated one. I'd do it myself, but I don't know how. Incorrect tense throughout article. edit

A lot of the article, especially the intro, is written with the past tense. He's still alive and (as far as I could ascertain) doing well. I'll fix it next time I'm awake and have time, or anyone else feel free to do so. Rafaelloaa (talk) 10:40, 19 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

I've corrected the lead section. The past tense used in the rest of the article seems appropriate. I'm amazed that you can edit so well in your sleep. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:44, 19 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sultan Kösen is a Kurd edit

In the article stands Sultan Kösen Turk, but in reality he is a Kurd from Mardin . You should mention this in the article. Especially since he chooses the pro-Kurdish party HDP himself Avestaboy (talk) 09:36, 31 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

A source for Kösen's political affiliations would be very useful. Do you have another source for him being described as "a Kurd", as we already have one? Perhaps it would be better to describe him in the lead as "a Turkish Kurd"? Martinevans123 (talk) 09:52, 31 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
So I have now adjusted the opening sentence and have added Category:Turkish Kurdish people. Looking forward to any source for his political affiliation. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:07, 31 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Write on Google Sultan Kösen HDP. Then you will see him with a HDP-Flag. Avestaboy (talk) 17:42, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Are you suggesting that he is a firm supporter of HDP?, perhaps even an activist? If so, that could be added to the article, if you could provide a good source. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:28, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

I dont know if he was a aktivst. But what i know is that he is a Kurd from Turkey and choose the HDP . The Kurds dont have a own state therefore many people think he is a Turk . But thats wrong. In Kurdish tv channels he has spocken Kurdish language . Not all people in Turkey understand Kurdish therefore he speak Turkish too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Avestaboy (talkcontribs) 19:13, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well he is already placed in Category:Kurds in Turkey and in Category:Turkish Kurdish people. Looking at others there I see that Cigerxwîn has a nationality of Kurdish, while Aynur Doğan has both Kurdish and Turkish. What would be best here? Martinevans123 (talk) 19:31, 11 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Maybe you can write Sultan Kösen is a Kurd from Turkey . Thats only my proposal. Avestaboy (talk) 23:31, 12 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

There is no nationality or citizenship like Kurdish so I correct it to Turkish. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.98.12.148 (talk) 13:33, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

I learned in college that Kurdish is a nationality. 67.164.18.219 (talk) 22:06, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

It would be better if you write Turk of Kurdish ancestry ( As well as on the German-language Wikipedia). Avestaboy (talk) 15:04, 9 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Following discussion from what the IP user suggested and from what has been suggested, I have described him as being a Turk and also mentioned his Kurd ethnicity in the lede section. I imagine that this would be a contentious subject and is probably one of the reasons why its locked. There doesn't seem to be any guideline or internal consistency regarding this though. Not born in Mardin edit

Sultan Kösen was born in Mardin Province, but in the town of „Derik“ not Mardin city. 2001:871:210:5595:8D15:B3B5:559E:4748 (talk) 20:50, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Not done: There is no Kurdish nation. Article already states he is Kurdish. "Kösen, a Turkish man of ethnic Kurdish descent" Cannolis (talk) 03:41, 26 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
From wikipedia's page on kurdish nationalism: "Kurdish nationalism has long been espoused and promoted by the worldwide Kurdish diaspora."
I learned in college that the kurds are a nation. Here is Wikipedia's definition of nation: "A nation is a community of people formed on the basis of a combination of shared features such as language, history, ethnicity, culture and/or society. A nation is thus the collective identity of a group of people understood as defined by those features. Some nations are equated with ethnic groups (see ethnic nationalism) and some are equated with affiliation to a social and political constitution (see civic nationalism and multiculturalism). A nation is generally more overtly political than an ethnic group. A nation has also been defined as a cultural-political community that has become conscious of its autonomy, unity and particular interests." 67.164.18.219 (talk) 22:10, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's great, but the policy is pretty clear here. He is a citizen of Turkey, and the article already mentions that he is of Kurdish decent. OhNoitsJamie Talk 22:13, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
