Winnipeg businessman Stuart Murray became leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba on November 4, 2000 and in a by-election that same year was elected as the MLA for Kirkfield Park. Prior to his election, Stuart was extensively involved with the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba. Stuart served in senior volunteer positions in the 1990, 1995 and 1999 election campaigns.
Stuart has a successful track record in business, politics and community service. Immediately prior to becoming leader, Stuart was the President and CEO of Domo Gasoline Corporation, an independent family-owned business that has 70 retail outlets throughout Western Canada.
Mr. Murray was raised in Punnichy, Saskatchewan by his father Victor, a grain farmer, and his mother Jean, the local pharmacist and town councillor. After completing high school, Stuart attended the University of Manitoba to study Science. He then transferred to Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto to continue in Architectural Science.
Stuart has studied and worked across Canada. He began his diverse business career in the music industry, travelling the world as road manager for the Canadian rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears. In 1982, he became media director and fundraiser for the Canadian Opera Company. In 1985, Stuart began working for the Prime Minister of Canada. Stuart became Vice-President of Domo in 1989 and in 1993 he was promoted to President and CEO.
Mr. Murray is known for his demonstrated commitment to Manitoba businesses and the Winnipeg community. As volunteer Chairman of the 1999 World Junior Hockey Championship, Stuart and his team organized one of the best-attended and most financially successful tournaments in the history of the Championship. In recognition of their efforts, Stuart and his team of volunteers were awarded the Order of the Buffalo Hunt, one of Manitoba’s highest honours.
Stuart and his wife Ashleigh Everett, the President and CEO of Royal Canadian Securities, have been married since 1982. In 1989 they returned to Winnipeg to raise their children, Sarah and Hayley.
