Review assessment

A recap of user:Finetooth's review assessment, and the current status:

• The two long lists toward the end of the article grab my attention. Insofar as possible, it would be better to blend the list material into the narrative sections higher up in the article.
  

 Done I would suggest moving the architecture items into the "Arts and culture" section, where you discuss the Majestic Theater. I'd move the Streator Public Library from "Education" "into "Arts and culture" as well. You'd then have all the NHRP buildings in one place. The armory and St. Stephens (as architecture) could go there too, and you could then delete the empty "Architecture" section. Include all of these things as prose rather than as bulleted lists.

:The section with the list of famous names is a bit tougher, but you could start by eliminating people like Ralph Plumb who already appear in other sections. The goal would be to work the other important people into the text sections as part of the general narrative and to eliminate or greatly reduce the "Notable residents" list.

Moved most writers, authors into main "Arts" section. Removed Ralph Plumb from notable list and expanded his biography in the History section. Moved local legislator into Government section. The remaining notables have been scattered thoughout the article.

•  Not done yet. The "Economy" section suffers from a problem similar to the long-list sections. It's a quasi-list rather than a flowing prose narrative. You might try re-writing this section chronologically in a way that lets us see how the economy developed over time and how one thing led to another. We get no sense of what happened to the coal industry, for example. Who bought the coal? Was it displaced by low-sulfur coal from elsewhere? Is coal still being mined near Streator? Were the coal miners able to shift to other kinds of work in Streator? Was agriculture important to Streator's economy when coal was king? And so on. In other words, the list needs to be connected in some way; otherwise, the coal, beer bottles, and heavy-duty sewer cleaning equipment seem disconnected.

•  Done The "History" section could be expanded. It says nothing about early inhabitants. Who lived near Streator prior to the 19th century? Any Clovis sites thereabouts? Former Indian villages? Any explorers, missionaries, surveyors, or geologists who preceded the coal miners?

(looking for historical info on the discovery of coal in IL)

•  Done The "Geography" section could be expanded to include more geology. What kind of coal? How old is the coal? What geologic conditions led to its deposition? How extensive are the coal beds? In addition, a bit more about current geography would be useful. You might, for example, tell us which highways connect Streator to which more well-known cities and how far away they are.

•  Done If possible, the citations should include author, title, publisher, date of publication, URL, and access date. What's possible and what's needed depends on what kind of work you are citing. The "cite" family of templates is quite handy for getting the right information in the right order and serving as a reminder of what's needed. Please see WP:CIT.

•  Not done yet. I see minor Manual of Style issues such as missing metric conversions, missing no-break codes (WP:NBSP), and repetition of "Streator" in the section heads. A copyedit to catch these low-level things would be a good idea.

Worthy Streator article

I am currently working on a new wikipedia article for Worthy S. Streator, the entrepreneur whom Streator is named for. It currently is in my sandbox: User:Ljmajer/Sandbox2. I am looking for any information regarding Streators death and burial. This information has escaped me so far. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd be most appreciative. -- Ljmajer (talk) 01:11, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

The Worthy S. Streator article is now online. According to the local Steator newspaper, they will publish an article on the life of Dr. Streator on Monday Nov 24, 2008. I'll add more to this article when the news article is published. -- Ljmajer (talk) 09:10, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Assessment update

As the current primary editor for this article, I know that I should not be the one offering an assessment, but it appears that both attached projects WikiProject:Illinois (assessment) and WikiProject Cities are not actively assessing articles (at least humans aren't). Much work has been added to the article since October, and much more needs to be done. I will update the article to "C" status, based on the recently completed review assessment. Streator Township High School

Isn't it just Streator High School? There is no Streator Township, Streator is in Bruce and Eagle Townships. Even the school's website can not decide, calling it Streator Township High School but SHS right after, and can not be used for a valid source then. 173.24.117.126 (talk) 11:29, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

The sign on the building reads "Streator Township High School" (Streator High School website). See the photo in the banner. That should settle it. Ljmajer (talk) 23:56, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Not quite. Again, there is no township called Streator, so how can it be Streator Township High School? Also, much of the abbreviations for the school are given as SHS,, not STHS. Many of the surrounding schools are named for townships, so it could likely be an error that school officials made believing that all schools include the "township" moniker. I first want to say that I appreciate your interest in Wikipedia, and specifically the Streator pages. It would be great if you would create a Wikipedia account, and help make the Streator sites the best they can be.

You are correct that there is no such thing as "Streator Township". But the article is regarding the High School. The school could have been called "Streator Heights H.S." or "Streator River H.S.". The fact that there may not be a Streator River, Township, etc.. is irrelevant to what the real name of the school is. Racial crime entry

Regarding the recent addition of a crime (apparently it occurred in Streator, but the writer doesn't state that in his entry)... I moved it from the transportation section, to the "Law and Government" section, but am questioning it's noteworthiness and encyclopedic value in this article. There are a number of crimes and incidents that could be included, but unless it add to the discussion of defining the city, is it necessary to include it here? Do we need to add the Dylan Mesarchik case? If so, I'll create a subsection under "Law and Government" for "Crimes in the city".. we can list all the titillating cases, though again, I don't think any of these helps to define Streator, or make this article more encyclopedic.
