Remove "cardinal" from the name. Only the press calls it such. It is not the official name/mascot. In fact the students use the bands mascot "the tree" when referring to Stanford — Preceding unsigned comment added by LSJUMB (talkcontribs) 14:55, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Lead too long edit

Does anybody else think the lead in this article is too long? Per MOS:LEAD, "[a]s a general rule of thumb, a lead section should contain no more than four well-composed paragraphs and be carefully sourced as appropriate." If I don't hear any objections in the next two weeks, then I'll go ahead and attempt to trim it down. -- Notecardforfree (talk) 07:04, 22 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Assessed for WikiProject edit

5 December 2019: Assessed for WP:WikiProject Stanford University: B class (previously start), top importance (unchanged). B class because the article satisfies many, but not all, criteria for B class:

  1. Suitably referenced
  2. Reasonably covers the topic. Leaves me a bit wanting for a lot of the coaches' eras as a casual reader, but given the scope and length of the article, the level of detail is passable (perhaps an area for improvement).
  3. Defined structure
  4. Reasonably well-written. Needs a thorough pass for WP:MOS compliance, but this is not an auto-fail for B class.
  5. Contains good supporting material (good tables)
  6. Content is appropriately understandable

Top importance is unchanged.

According to the Stanford athletic website, "From 1972 until November 17, 1981, Stanford’s official nickname was Cardinals, in reference to one of the school colors, not the bird." This is discussed more in the Stanford Cardinal article. --Esprqii (talk) 19:08, 26 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
