I can't work out where this info has come from. The history links take you nowhere.???
Sao Jose is (without consulting my material right now) the school called "Externato" (day school) that was closed under pressure from the then Indonesian government ostensibly because it persisted in conducting lessons in Portuguese. In fact it was also the hotbed nursery of the pro-independence youth movement that gathered way at around the time of the Pope's visit in October 1989 and reached a tragic milestone at the Santa Cruz Cemetery in November 1991. Sao Jose lies between the Balide Church to the west and the Minor Seminary to the east on a street leading to the Cemetery.
