Is it possible for this entry to be more than a definition with 2 examples? Pdbailey 17:35, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll put in a few more examples later. Simon Beavis —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 17:07, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Might it make more sense for this to be merged with redshirt? Pdbailey 21:55, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
No. The redshirt's defining characteristic is that he is expendable and he is there with the explicit purpose to be killed, probably sooner than later. A spear carrier is a stock background character who is just an escort or in the background. The Star Trek equivalent are the unnamed characters who sit in Ten Forward or perpetually walk in the corridors of Enterprise to give the impression of a busy ship. When they die, their death is usually collateral damage, whereas a redshirt is killed in exceptional circumstances to showcase a threat that the (unkillable) main characters face. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.103.102.201 (talk) 07:32, 31 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
