Talk:Southwestern archaeology

Name change? edit

Now that this article has been broken out, there are many other topics to consider -- warfare, trade, archaeology, etc. Once expanded, how 'bout "Pre-historic Southwestern Cultures". Opinions? WBardwin 17:39, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Need outline here -- Subsistance (hunting/gathering, agriculture, plant resources, irrigation), Material culture (pottery, architecture, religion/art, trade), Social culture (trade again, warfare, social/political organization), as well as archaeological findings on culturally distinct peoples and prehistory. Even a history of archaeological activity could go here. Ideas welcome. WBardwin 07:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
How about changing it so it includes the country name? Southwestern what? Title is ambiguous and not helpful. Canterbury Tail talk 13:12, 3 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

@WBardwin:, @Canterbury Tail: I propose the name 'Indigenous peoples of the North American southwest'. This is specific and reflects the fact that the article is mostly about culture and not archaeology. It is also in line with most of the article names of the other North American cultural areas. @UtDicitur: I think your move significantly changed the subject of the article. "Southwest archaeology" is a (disproportionately influential) regional subdiscipline of archaeology the ought to have its own article. The content of the article is also primarily archaeological; it's about prehistoric/pre-Columbian cultures rather than contemporary indigenous peoples. I think there's also room for an article on the indigenous peoples of the Southwestern United States, but it shouldn't be a repurposing of this one. – Joe (talk) 14:38, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Joe Roe: I have created the article Indigenous peoples of the North American Southwest as the region includes Mexico, so your suggestion of restricting it to the United States is not appropriate. Feel free to remove any material from this article that is too 'contemporary', as the less overlap with the new article the better. UtDicitur (talk) 15:54, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

@UtDicitur: Great, but when copying text between articles you need to attribute it. Please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. – Joe (talk) 23:43, 11 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
