Restoration edit

Moved this comment here from the end of the Preservation section...

The above is not at all a correct statement of the Museum's position. The Museum knows of no specific physical obstacle to returning the locomotive to operating condition other than cost. The estimated cost of restoring SP 4294 to operating condition - or for any similar locomotive of its size - is in the neighborhood of $1 million to $1.5 million dollars. Current policies of both Union Pacific and of BNSF are that neither would allow SP 4294 to operate on their rails after such a restoration. Given all the important needs of the Museum, the priorities are to put that kind of money into things that the museum could get real use out of, rather than spending $1 million plus on SP 4294 just to boiler very expensive water and not run anywhere. Meanwhile the Museum has done nothing to preclude a future restoration to operation, should there be changes that would make that worthwhile.

Assessment comment edit

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:Southern Pacific 4294/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Needs a few more references (there is only one now) added as inline citations. The construction and use section could be expanded, and it would be nice to find a couple more photos from this time and one or two from the musuem (I may have one in my own archives that would work for the preservation section). Thanks, this article still needs better citations. Slambo (Speak) 02:41, 26 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
