Use of Certified Checks in 1980's

When I was in Korea in the 1980's it was common to use certified checks for 100,000 Won as common currency. This was due to the fact that the largest banknote was the 10,000 Won note, whose value was approximately US $10-$12 at the time. Since credit cards and electronic transfers were much less commonly used at the time, large retail transactions were often unwieldy if you didn't use these certified checks. I believe that this was part of the driving force behind the issuance of the 50,000 and intended issuance of the 100,000 Won notes.
