Talk:South Elgin High School

this is not the school's webpage edit

Here's a hint. If your copy starts out "Welcome to SEHS" the edit is going to get reverted. Every time. This is an encyclopedia article about the school. it is not the school's webpage. before you edit this page, please read the guidelines for content in High school articles at WP:SCH/AG. Thanks!. I was wondering, how come I couldn't put the school logo up, but that's acceptable? I'm just wondering, because i tried a while back but it was taken down within minutes. I'm pretty new to wikipedia, I'm just now starting to actually figure stuff out. I was just wondering. Slipperyslopes (talk) 20:11, 7 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

You have not made any other edits under that username. Please point us to the edit in question. Meters (talk) 20:36, 7 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, Slipperyslopes, I think I may have found the article but just like Meters, I have not found the edit in question. Generally, if I reverted it, it was most likely uploaded to Commons under a false claim of rights such as public domain or own work. Logos are copyrighted and have material value to the school district, the copyright owner. So much so that the school I graduated from in the Indiana suburbs of Chicago garners its third largest revenue stream from license fees for the use of its logo on T-shirts and the like, behind only taxes and state & federal aid. More than book rental or athletic event ticket sales (that's a lot as our football stadium seats over 10,000). Anyway, when an image is uploaded to commons, the copyright holder must specifically authorize it and doing so effectively eliminates their ability to control its use and earn revenue from it. Logos may be uploaded to English Wikipedia under what is known as a fair use exception to copyright law. I know this is all very confusing. I've been at this for nearly 5 years and it still confuses me. The bottom line is you probably did it wrong. If you want to put the link to the image here, either Meters or I would be happy to do it right. John from Idegon (talk) 22:57, 7 August 2016 (UTC)Reply
