Software update as a redirect to Patch (computing)? edit

Software update is a redirect to Patch (computing) at the moment.

But not every software update is a patch: "A patch is a piece of software designed to update a computer program or its supporting data, to fix or improve it.", while software update is more general. --5.170.9.7 (talk) 20:29, 9 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

I can see arguments both ways. These days, software update includes dissemination, verification, and often progressive roll-outs to catch problems before annoying 100% of users. These issues are not part of patching per se. On the other hand, the subjects overlap a great deal. What it boils down to is the article text. If it supports a split, then a split may make sense. If we don't have anything better than Patch (computing) to fill a separate Software update article with, it's silly. 71.41.210.146 (talk) 07:16, 25 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
