Merger edit

We have had a recent merger between articles entitled Singe and Singeing. I prefer the former title, which seems easier on the eye, and so have moved to this. Other forms of the word appear in the article and as redirects and so we have have reasonably comprehensive coverage. Colonel Warden (talk) 12:31, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I prefer the style recommended at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (verbs). Technically, "singe" does exist as a noun, but since the article is about the action of singeing, not "a burn", I think the gerund form is the more appropriate title.--Father Goose (talk) 17:57, 16 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Singe seems fine as a noun, being used to denote the process of singeing, per the OED entry. It is a much more common usage and so is preferred per WP:NAME. Colonel Warden (talk) 09:09, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I would have to guess that most of those instances of "singe" returned by Google would be the verb form ([1]). Should we take the question to Wikipedia:Proposed moves?--Father Goose (talk) 17:55, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'd expect many of the "singe" instances to be sites en français written by very clever monkeys - at least if the search engine isn't going to be able to completely exclude Canadian-language results from appearing in the search output. :) --66.102.80.212 (talk) 05:51, 20 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • This page looks like a random collection of things called "singe", and very much a dictionary entry... 70.55.84.212 (talk) 05:09, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • No, there is no randomness here - the article comprehensively discusses the application of heat or flame to produce a scorching effect. The article is not a dictionary entry as there is no spcecial focus upon the word singe as a word. Colonel Warden (talk) 06:54, 21 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The appears to be little consensus for another move or merge, I will delist this from WP:RM. Kevin (talk) 03:53, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I should drop a note in case this comes up (I find that the merging admin is sometimes cited in later disputes over names): I just merged the histories of two existing articles. I'm completely agnostic about which has the better title. Cool Hand Luke 04:13, 25 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
