Sierra is a Spanish word meaning "mountain range". It derives from the Spanish for saw, because of the resemblance of some mountain ranges to saw blades. Madre is the Spanish for mother. Sierra Madre thus means the Mother Range or "maternal mountains". Cf. "The Mother Mountains", a review of the book In the Sierra Madre. --Stemonitis 05:49, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
