Why isn't the name Shondor used more often? edit

I'm a Cleveland native, and was living in Cleveland during the 1960s and 1970s, yet I never remember anyone, especially my father who was a criminal defence attorney, calling Shondor Birns "Alex". Seriously, no one, save for official records used the name Alex when referring to Shonder Birns. So why is the name Shondor supplanted by Alex when he wasn't known by Alex?
