Bristol Channel Tunnel (minutes of I.C.E) edit
This tunnel is was discussed in great depth by James Henry Greathead and a number of other civil engineers around 1872. The British Institution of Civil Engineers (www.ice.org) has records of the minutes of the meeting. I requested a copy through my university of the mines only to discover that Greathead discussed not only the idea of the Channel Tunnel over 100 years prior to the construction but also discussed the POSSIBILITY of the Irish Sea tunnel also. I imagine the idea was to allow travel from Europe to Ireland by train only as it was the fastest method of the day. They talked about 500 fathoms in the Irish Sea. Along the way was the Severn estuary and Bristol Channel with its shipping lanes issues.
I would highly recommend that researchers read that material to help understand the imagination and ingenuity of the proposers and why the solutions implemented were what they were. Ashattock (talk) 22:46, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
