Origin and meaning

Sen is not just derived from Sangskrit,main root of this word is "indo-european". This surname is not only used by indian but also Turkish. Dr.SunBD (talk) 20:05, 8 November 2020 (UTC)

As per convention, the lead section may state that this is a surname used by so and so, not the sequence in history. Don't forget, this is an article on Sen (surname), therefore, the primary information cannot be the sequence of using the same, that too something not very consistent. Thanks. Sen is also found among Scandinavian people, i.e Jansen, Amundsen etc. Whatever changes I have done yesterday, it is based on proper referencing. I will add some more information later. I am seeing certain portions of the article in yellow after my editing, can anyone explain why it's so ? I am an Autoconfirmed user of Wikipedia as well as Wikivoyage, so kindly respect my edits. Thankyou Arnold Sir for your fast and great reply. Sir, what I am about to inform you is one of the shameful hidden secrets of the historic land of Bengal, India. Sir, my good name is Anirban Sen and my account name is Anirban Kolkata. Sir, the concerned article is about my personal surname, so I know about it on a family level and better than other Bengalis having different surnames. Sir, first I am giving you a preliminary idea about the four main castes of Hinduism, i.e. the four types of Hindus (like Catholics and Protestants in Christianity). The four main castes of Hinduism are Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra. Brahmin are the elite caste at the very top who are mainly priests, teachers and doctors. They claim to be part of Brahma (supreme God) and are descendants of various Rishis. The fundamental meaning of the word Brahmana (Brahmin) is part of Brahma, the supreme Hindu God. I and people like me who have Sen surname are direct descendants of Rishi Shaktri, i.e. the eldest son of Rishi Vashistha. Rishi Vashistha was the royal priest at the royal palace of Rama, who is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. So basically Rishi Shaktri was born in a priestly caste, and I, being descendant of Him belong to the same priestly caste of Rishi Shaktri. But unfortunately, in the medieval history of Bengal, Brahmins belonging to our Gotra were greatly tortured by Bengali Brahmins of other gotras having surnames like Mukherjee, Chatterjee, Banerjee, Ganguly, Chakroborty, Lahiri etc. They deliberately tortured us (i.e the Sen-s) and decreased our social status so much, that at one time, we were treated as Shudras, the lowest caste in Hinduism. I think they did this simply to maintain their social dominance. They spread rumours that they were only priests, who were eligible to do Puja (worshipping of Hindu gods) at temples. They termed Shaktri gotra Brahmins as "Baidya"(equivalent to non-Brahmins) and even Shudra. Many famous social reformers of Bengal, like Raja (King) Rajballabh of Dhaka and others fought against this social evil and thus Shaktri gotra Brahmins were able to regain their Brahmin status. The group of Brahmins who were responsible for the torture on Sen Brahmins are known as "Kulin Brahmins". They are responsible for the social evil of "Kulinism" in society of Bengal. Kulinism is a shame in the history of Bengal, and Kulin Brahmins were involved in malpractices like "Satidaha" (burning of young Hindu widows). Satidaha was stopped by the activities of the legendary Bengali social reformer Raja Rammohan Roy. He also fought against polygamy, which was another evil habit of the Kulin Brahmins. Kulin Brahmins used to marry 100 or even more wives. The worst part of this marrying was that old,sick men belonging to the Kulin Brahmin community used to marry maidens, and as a result the old husband used to die soon and the young widow was burnt in the process of Satidaha, just to capture her property. The great tortures of the Kulin Brahmin community reached such an extent that one member of their own community , Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (whose original name is Ishwar Chandra Banerjee), fought against his own Kulin Brahmin community. It was the time of British colonialism in Bengal, and Vidyasagar took the help of ethical British men to legally start "Bidhabha -Bibaha", which in English means "Remarriage of Hindu widows". As he fought against his own community, he faced the humiliation and torture of the orthodox, evil Hindu society throughout his life. Sir, the people belonging to the "Sen" surname are actually priestly Brahmins, who are always insulted and lies are spread about them in the society, thanks mainly to some evil members of the Kulin Brahmin community. But I must also say that there are many good Kulin Brahmins who accept the truth that Bengali people having "Sen" surname are actually Brahmins, and not anything else as lies spread in the society. As you may have found out in the original article, they have termed us as belonging to the "Baidya" and "Kshatriya" community, both of which are total lies. Bengali people having Shaktri gotra are actually priestly Brahmins. Unfortunately , due to the torture of the Kulin Brahmins, many "Sen" people have also started believing that they are Baidya, and not Brahmin. They are an unfortunate lot, who will learn the truth through my writing. They actually fear to go against evil social norms due to fear of persecution, but in their hearts they know they are Brahmins. You can check the page of Amartya Sen, the Nobel prize winning economist. In his facts page of the Nobel prize website, it is mentioned that he was born in a Brahmana family. Another thing I removed from the article was the name of a Sindhi king. Sir, this page is about Bengali Sen surname, and not about any non-Bengali surname. Sir, I am providing you all the links which will prove that people having "Sen" surname, who have Shaktri gotra (i.e. they are descendants of Rishi Shaktri) are actually priestly Brahmins.

Hey Anirban Kolkata, before coming up with allegations of vandalism, please read the basic policies of Wikipedia. We are not here to be judgemental, rather we have to stick to what reliable, neutral authors say, and such sources must be verifiable. None of the sources mentioned by you are considered as reliable as far as caste articles (sensitive ones, especially every one claiming Brahmin or Kshatriya status) are concerned. And moreover, what you are doing is basically WP:OR. Please find genuine sources by reliable authors stating that Sen surname is used by Brahmins before you edit this part. Thanks. "Sen" as Nagar Brahmin Surname

Dear user:Ekdalian, I show with wp:rs that I Sen is a Nagar Brahmin surname.,if you want to remove it from lead section you have to show wp:rs about "Sen is not a Nagar Brahmin Surname". Without showing reliable source don't remove this. Mr. Sumit Sen (talk) 10:08, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

No, Mr. Sumit Sen; none of your sources (all three) mention that the same is used as a surname by the Nagar Brahmin community. All these sources say that a particular individual (that too way back in 1700s) had a name ending with 'Sen', which is not at all enough to incorporate the same here; in fact it amounts to WP:OR/WP:SYN.
