Book about Schott by Kappler & Steiner: primary source

I was curious about the book used as a reference in the article, so I had it lent to my local library and consulted it there. The two authors, Kappler and Steiner, are/were public relations managers at Schott. The book is published by Schott AG. It describes the history of the company in broadly positive terms and is largely self-serving. This is definitely a primary source, and I would say, not one of the best kind.

For the anecdote, the book is binded with a plate of Ceran glass by Schott. It contains dozens of illustrations copied from Wikimedia Commons, all vaguely attributed but without mention of a license. -- Ariadacapo (talk) 19:17, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello, thank you very much for your feedback! I have replaced the references to the Kappler/Steiner book with better sources. Hopefully this is an improvement to the article. While doing this, I've also collected some additional information and sources relating to the company's history during and after WW2 which I would also like to incorporate in the next couple of weeks. Maintenance Template Removal

Hi, I have made some changes to the article to address the issues identified in the maintenance template, in particular the self-published and primary sources in the history section. I understand that I can't remove the templates myself as a paid editor, but I was wondering if one of you would be able to take a look?

Per Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines, you should not edit the page directly but instead propose changes on the talk page for review. I am going to go ahead and revert the changes; please post them as separate requests here on the talk page for review. I think most of the edits are likely reasonable and would be easily accepted, but they should be reviewed individually. I’ve followed your advice and submitted our changes (reverted for procedural reasons) through the edit request process. Unfortunately, I haven’t received any response yet after a couple of weeks (see below).

As far as I am aware, COI users are discouraged from editing Wikipedia directly, but it is not forbidden. While I understand that company representatives editing company pages on Wikipedia can be problematic, I worked hard to make sure that my edits were factual and in the interests of the broader Wikipedia readers. That’s why I focused on making edits to the history section that I thought would be relatively uncontroversial.

I am still convinced that my changes constitute an improvement to the article and address long-standing issues.

Would you be so kind as to take another look at my changes? Otherwise, would you be able to give me a recommendation as to how to move forward with 1) the edits themselves, and 2) the template issues?

It would be great if someone could explain to me what the concrete issues were with the contents of my edits, otherwise I would like to add them back into the article. Proposed Changes for Review

Per Spencer's request (see above), I would like to propose a couple of changes that I had made previously to the article, but were reverted for procedural reasons:

It's been one month since this request was first replied to. It appears that some changes were made, and then these were reverted. • In the Jürgen Steiner reference Deutsche Biographie provided with the request, Steiner states: "1927 trat Schott die Nachfolge seines Vaters in der Geschäftsleitung an und baute die Marktposition des Jenaer Glaswerks als eines der weltweit führenden Spezialglashersteller weiter aus."
• From this, we can see that the year in which Steiner describes Erich Schott as taking over management of the company was 1927, not 1928.

Hi Spintendo, you are right, my mistake! The LIDAR Magazine source had 1928 listed, and Deutsche Biographie has 1927 listed. I spoke with our archivist, and he confirmed that 1927 is the correct date. Please see below for the revised edit request:

The German word gründete means founded, which is different than the word for developed, entwickelt. The source says Er gründete neue Geschäftsfelder, wie z. B. Herstellung von Spezialglaskomponenten für die Elektrotechnik oder von hitzebeständigen Hauswirtschaftsgläsern der Marke Jenaer Glas, sowie erste Tochtergesellschaften which indicates that he founded the areas of the company which then produced heat resistant household and electrical engineering glass, whereas to say that he developed new business fields of glass production, as in the proposal, would make it sound as if he were in the lab creating the glass himself. Hi Spintendo, Thanks for your feedback! To me, “developed” in the context of business is very general, but I can see your point. I would propose to translate “gründete” as “established,” so then we could say he “established new business fields for the company, such as a specialty glass components for electrical engineering and heat resistant borosilicate glassware.” Alternatively, perhaps something like “Under his leadership, the company developed new business fields, such as specialty glass components for electrical engineering and heat resistant borosilicate glassware.” would work? Revised products section

Hello editors, I've worked on the products section to improve the lack of references and marketing tonality, as well as to provide a better overview of the products and applications. This new draft should address these issues and is meant to replace the existing section:

Schott produces materials including specialty glass, glass-ceramics, and polymers for industries such as home appliances, pharmaceuticals, electronics, semiconductors, optics, life sciences, automotive, aerospace and astronomy.

In the consumer market, glass-ceramics from Schott are used in cooktops for electric, gas, and induction cooking under the brand name CERAN.

In industry, its glass-ceramic Zerodur is used in microlithography and as mirror substrates for large optical telescopes.

Prominent examples of these telescopes are the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope and Extremely Large Telescope in Chile, the Gran Telescopio Canarias in Spain, and the Keck I and II telescopes at the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii.

Other applications include flat glass for home appliances, components for consumer electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. It also produces glass and filters with applications in digital cameras, laser optics, machine vision, and metrology. Some of its more recent applications include ultra-thin and flexible cover glass for smartphone displays and glass wafers for augmented reality.

Schott’s subsidiary Schott Pharma develops and produces pharmaceutical packaging such as ampoules, cartridges, syringes, and vials.
