Use of the term gay marriage in this context is misleading - the cited sources deal with specific consequences of such changes relating to trans people, not same-sex/gay marriage. Whilst we might be able to find an alternative term to use, gay marriage most certainly is not correct. Agreed. There was a reason I wrote it "equal" and not "same-sex" marriage in the first place; I still recall Huppert's speech in the Commons about how "Far too often LGBT seems to stop too early.". There's a definite distinction to be made. Additionally, "gay marriage" is a disfavoured term because of how it excludes bisexual people in such marriages. That's been Wikipedia style since before Prop 8. At the very least, it should be "same-sex marriage". Sceptre(talk) 20:32, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
"Same-sex" suffers from the same problem as "gay" as conflating sexuality with legal issues arising from gender identity and marriage. I have had a look at some other UK-centric articles and the same-sex/equal distinction does seem to be being made: Pages at Benjamin Cohen (journalist) and Out4Marriage use the phrases "equal marriage" and "marriage equality", whereas Stonewall (charity) has the heading "same-sex marriage".
I also noticed that the term "gay marriage" is not used anywhere, even by opponents of recent legislation: The web site for Coalition for Marriage uses the term same-sex marriage. I am unable to gain any useful input into alternative terms to use from them or any other organisations that responded to the consultation, as those responding negatively to proposals generally did not respond to questions outside of same-sex marriage. ~Excesses~ (talk) 21:55, 5 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think we need a term that can be used to cover non-same-sex components of marriage that can't be seen as violating NPV rules, but this talk page doesn't seem like the right place to do it as it is going to impact more than just this article. I have nominated this article for deletion. The subject is not notable. It is not common for local councillors to have their own article. Brown's only 'claim to fame' is being included on a 'Pink List', which is not a sufficient achievement (many others on the same list do not have articles). 86.158.182.11 (talk) 21:35, 15 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
