The category "Canals in England" has been removed from this article on the grounds of redundancy. The counter argument is that an article needs to be advertised in as many relevant categories as possible so that the maximum number of interested parties can find it. Instead of continuing to revert other editor's changes over and again I have opened this issue for discussion here. Martin Cordon 16:09, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

I tried to add them but it got garbled. Here are the numbers: 51.7162|-2.0566 coordinates for midpoint; 51.7041|-2.0504 coordinates for Coates portal. I hope someone knows what to do with them. The midpoint coordinate has a copy error or typo: Research elsewhere indicates this is a straight tunnel, as I'd expect anyway, but the midpoint coordinates would make it quite angled and would be far from midpoint anyway. If I correct the longitude to -2.0666, it works out. I'll make that edit and will let someone else tweak it. Eric Sobocinski 13:25, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

I see that the coordinates are given as degrees to four places of decimals, which is about 11 metres. See WP:OPCOORD: for a feature over 3 km long, it's misleading to give coordinates to an accuracy greater than 300 metres, so degrees to three places of decimals (or degrees and minutes to one-tenth of a minute of arc) is quite sufficient. --Redrose64 (talk) 17:53, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

Merging material from Sapperton railway tunnel

There was confusion: one article on both tunnels, and this one on the canal tunnel only. So I switched them around, and am tidying up the railway tunnel article. Meanwhile, the following is text that I have not yet checked against this article, so I am parking it here temporarily.

"...remains the fourth longest canal tunnel after Standedge, Yorkshire; Strood, Kent; and the Lapal Tunnel near Halesowen. The biggest engineering feature of the canal, it has now fallen into disrepair.

"...The tunnel is at the summit level of the canal, 362 feet (110 m) above sea level, on the 8.1 mile (13.0 km) pound between the summit locks at Daneway and Siddington. The Eastern portal of the tunnel is near Coates and Tarlton, 51.7041°N 2.0504°W / 51.7041; -2.0504 (Sapperton canal tunnel - eastern portal). The western portal of the tunnel is in the steep-sided Frome river valley between Sapperton and Daneway.51.7288°N 2.0830°W / 51.7288; -2.0830 (Sapperton canal tunnel - western portal)

"...After completion there were problems, and the tunnel was shut for two and a half months during 1790 for further work to be carried out. The summit level was completed in 1787, and became operational as soon as the tunnel opened."

Longest tunnel in England?

it was the longest tunnel of any kind in England from 1789 to 1811.

This seems a curious statement - was there a longer tunnel elsewhere in the UK? Or somewhere in Europe? I can't find evidence for one.

I actually wondered if Sapperton was one of the longest tunnels in the world when built. The only one I can find that's definitely longer, and older, is the Roman Gadara Aqueduct. Could our tunnel be in second place? ElectronicsForDogs (talk) 09:30, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
