Talk:Santiano (song)

Composed by Dave Fisher? edit

Dave Fisher may have written the French lyrics, but the song was a well known capstan shanty long before Mr. Fisher was born (see the Santianna article). Paul Magnussen (talk) 21:40, 24 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

There is no account to Dave Fisher in the French version. Only Jacques Plante is credited in the French songbooks, and only for the lyrics. Gwalarn (talk) 14:58, 30 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

French song? edit

Hello, I don't really understood, french version of this exit is totally different than it.

I'ts said: Santiano is à english marine's song from XIX century adapt on french. Song sing by english's marines who fight with Mexic against texas. And Stan Hugill think is maybe originaly à référence of Sainte Anne, patronne of Britain and marins.

Any can explain? Fyo - décember 28, 2010- —Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.46.184.133 (talk) 17:24, 28 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

No, Hugill says that Bone thought that (that was maybe originally a reference of Sainte Anne), but that in actual fact it is a reference to the Mexican general Antonio López de Santa Anna (Shanties from the Seven Seas, P.75); vide the verse about 'General Taylor gained the day, Santy Anno ran away'. Hugues Aufray's source edit

Just a personal observation, since I have no way to prove it; but my guess would be that Hugues got it from the Kingston Trio, since it was on their best-selling first album that came out a short while before Hugues would have recorded his version — and it was fairly obscure before that. It's a similar arrangement, too. Paul Magnussen (talk) 15:52, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Highwaymen (folk band) also released it as part of their debut album in 1960. The liner notes proclaim the song originates from the 1840s. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 17:55, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Oh never mind, it is addressed when it mentions Santianna. Santiano's version sure sounds like the Highwaymen version, so I'm not sure why it is called a separate composition. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 18:18, 22 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

SantianoSantiano (song) – While Santiano (band) was named after the song, it's a matter of fact that they gain more interest now with double as many page views. --KnightMove (talk) 06:51, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
