demographics edit

Love the demographics part for this city...wish these kind of stats were available for all cities.

coordinates edit

The coordinates provided in this article (for the sidebar table) were from San Diego. I suspect someone copied and pasted the template and forgot to update the coordinates. Since this was making Santee show up in the middle of downtown San Diego on Google Earth, I've removed the coordinates. Could someone who knows the real location please update them. (I could guess from Google Earth but I don't know what's considered the center of town.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.49.41.61 (talk) 04:56, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Demographic data edit

There are, I believe, a number of arguments that can be made against the data that is being inserted repeatedly by User:Cooljuno411:

  1. The numbers have been computed using data from two different sources. That is, percentages from an older, county source were applied to population estimates from a newer, state source. This is absolutely horrendous methodology, as it assumes that all new population growth will be proportionally distributed across all races and ethnicities, an assumption that is absolutely unfounded.
  2. Uniform population data from a single source across all city articles is one of the better aspects of our US city articles on Wikipedia. It allows for easy comparison between cities. A reliable comparison cannot be made between one city using 2005 data and another city using 2000 data.
  3. Census 2000 data is an actual count; the data used by Cooljuno411, in addition to the poor methodology I noted earlier, is a mere estimate, subject to inaccuracies. Estimates are revised at a later date, as it's impossible to know how many people and which people live in a town without a census.
  4. "Hispanic Origin" is treated as a race, which is incorrect. Hispanics are an ethnicity, not a race. Hispanics can be a member of any race. This standard has been upheld in court (see Lemon Grove Incident) and by various federal authorities (including the OMB and the Census Bureau). If you look at census data, you will notice the term "White Non-Hispanic" used sometimes; that is because many Hispanics are considered White or Caucasian.

All in all, I think there is enough reason to not use the alternative data suggested by User:Cooljuno411. If anyone feels the data are outdated, there is going to be another census in 2010. --Node (talk) 18:38, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Skyline Image edit

I believe the caption listed as the skyline image should be changed as I doubt that it's really El Capitan as it's more than 360 miles north and can't possibly be seen in this photo. I am not from nor ever visited the area so wouldn't be able to accurately describe what is in this image. I would appreciate if someone who knows what this is of would change the caption accordingly. sirgregmac 06:07, 4 January 2011 (UTC)

Reply: It seems that El Capitan is a local name for the peak: "...El Cajon Mountain, known locally as El Capitan..." [1] It should probably be changed or clarified. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.192.174.102 (talk) 22:05, 4 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Mention of the 2001 school shooting edit

There have been repeated efforts to remove any mention of the 2001 Santee school shooting committed by Charles Andrew Williams. It was first mentioned in the article on 06:06, 26 November 2003 and remained in the article (ignoring immediately reverted vandalistic blankings) until it was removed without explanation on 02:09, 27 October 2005. It was re-inserted in the next edit, on 11:50, 14 November 2005, remaining until 06:35, 5 March 2008 when it was again removed without an edit summary. For the next 4 years, the shooting remained un-mentioned, until I re-inserted it on 09:20, 3 January 2012‎. On 18:00, 3 December 2012‎ User:Devindad removed it again with the edit summary: →‎History: Removed inappropriate item regarding a murder that occurred 11 years ago in the city. No city would list a murder under its"history". I noticed the removal just now, and re-added it (under the High Schools section) once again, on the basis that it is a notable event, and worth mentioning in the article on the city. Hopefully this detailed explanation of the history of the text will help later editors to contextualize any future attempts to remove it. JesseW, the juggling janitor 06:19, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

For further context, looking through the entries in the School shootings section of {{Shootings in the United States}} navigation template, most of them are mentioned in the corosponding settlement's article (or at least the educational institution's article). For example, see History_of_Austin,_Texas#Post-War_growth_and_its_consequences, Kent,_Ohio(in the lead), Olean,_New_York#See_also, California_State_University,_Fullerton#Campus_shootings(but not in the Fullerton article), San_Carlos,_San_Diego#Education, Jefferson_County_Public_Schools_(Colorado)#Unification_and_Modern_Era(but not in the Littleton, Colorado article), Parkway_School_District(but not Manchester, Missouri). Modern/Major Updates edit

I think there is a lot of potenital to update this page. I have made two edits so far (my first ever wiki edits).

Under government I updated who is vice mayor (Trotter). The council members are all the same but they rotate who is vice mayor, the source link even showed its Trotter so I didn't have to change that.

Secondly I buffed up the history to include the original name being Cowlestown before being renamed to Santee when Jennie remarried Milton Santee. I also included some light info on incorporation to a city include the 1977 vote against incorporation.

Over the coming days I hope to update the following sections:

1.Geography: confirm rattlesnake mountain as tallest peak. Include borders with City of San Diego on West Hills parkway (and the enclave of san diego that goes onto the golf course)

2.Economy: Right now the prision is the only thing listed here. Hoping to add detail about Santee Trolley Center being the hub for economic activity with the majortiy of places to eat/shop

3.Arts and Culture: Will provide details on the summer concert series, brews, and bites, and Santee Salutes

4.Parks and Rec: Will provide updated city pictures of park. Clarify difference betwen Town Center Community Park and YMCA and Sportsplex. YMCA and Sportsplex are private entities. Also include planned community center in that area. Also will list out names of parks in city and details on Mast Parks multi million dollar rennovation. Update on Mast Park West being built through grant money. Update Walker Trail info and info on San Dag being assigned to finish river trail along golf course to west hills pkwy

5. Noteable people: Steven Strasburg. Went to Carlton Oaks and then West Hills HS

All these updates will have solid sources, primarly through the city of santee website
