Talk:Saloop

I think I'm probably as knowledgeable about Saloop as anyone, and I can find no reference to it being a shameful drink due to its connection with venereal disease, so I've deleted that bit. Suggest deleting this entire article, there's nothing here which isn't in SalepGlynhughes (talk) 18:25, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • I have no difficulty finding such references and have added another citation. Andrew (talk) 23:24, 7 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

This is a very interesting subject. But I think we must be strict here, the reference to Saloop and venereal diseases in your suggested source of Edwin Augustus Peeples, 'Planting an Inheritance' is modern (1994), so it can't account for something which happened more than a century before. I've scoured the British Library and newspapers back to the 1600's as well as social surveys like Mayhew's and I cannot find any reference anywhere to pox and saloop. What do you think? • I have added another citation. This is to the work of Jonathan Pereira which was first published in the 19th century. I plan to add more from Mayhew in due course... Andrew (talk) 19:53, 16 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
