Jesse Malin

I separated the Jesse Malin section from the main body of the text, as the main body refers to Ryan's solo career and not producing career.Dlmccaslin 21:32, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Derogatis sentence

Derogatis felt the impact of the confrontation through a backlash against his work and heavy criticism of his methodology and style.

I don't like this sentence -- it doesn't read well; I don't know anything about whatever this answering machine message was, so could someone more in the know please rewrite this sentence? Thanks. --HughL [talk?]/[contribs] •  21:54, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Improvements / to-do list

I'm planning to do a lot of work on this article over the next couple of days. Here's everything I can think of that needs to be done:

  1. Biography. Replace Musical career and personal life with a Biography section. For example, see Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.
  2. Cleanup. Merge "Working with..." and Trivia sections into Biography.
  3. Elizabethtown. There is only one paragraph about this. It's not worth having a separate section heading for it -- why is Elizabethtown more notable than any of the other TV shows/movies to feature Ryan's work?
  4. Cardinal Radio. As above, the 11 "albums" uploaded to his web site aren't all that notable. High quantity, low quality. Not criticising his work, but we don't need a separate section heading for this.
  5. Songs Featured in Television and Film. For someone as prolific as Ryan Adams, it's not notable that his work is used all over the place. This list of TV shows and movies featuring his songs isn't all that useful. Suggest removing it.
  6. Early life. There is no information in the main article about Ryan's life before 1994. A couple of paragraphs about the first twenty years of his life would be useful.
  7. References. The article uses two different styles for citing sources; I suggest changing to use only ref tags. We also need to fix all the unsourced statements -- if it can't be verified it should be removed.
  8. Rewrite lead. Make sure that this conforms to WP:LEAD.
  9. General copyediting.

Feedback/suggestions/help welcome. Adam McMaster 17:25, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

In merging the trivia section, I've removed a lot of stuff which I don't think is notable enough to be included in an encyclopedia. In particular I'd like to bring attention to the "Adams has a reputation for his unstable temperament." bit -- I don't think anything listed there is all that important, though perhaps I'm not being completely objective about that. If others feel those incidents should be mentioned, they should be added to the main biography in the appropriate places. Adam McMaster 23:24, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
I've done most of what I want to do, though there's still some gaps in the bio I'm planning on filling. I really want to replace the photo in the infobox, 'cause the one that's there isn't very clear. Ideally we should put a promo shot or something there, if anyone has an image we can use please feel free to upload it. Adam McMaster 14:45, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Pinkheart Sessions

Per this discussion, I am merging content from The Pinkheart Sessions and The Pinkheart Sessions 2 into Ryan Adams. I have not included the personnell and track information in the article, but I have copied them below for reference. --B. Wolterding 08:25, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

that picture?

Is that really the best representation of Ryan Adams? He hardly looks like himself and is almost entirely obscured by a microphone. Surely someone has something better... 70.152.131.135 03:31, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

No, that picture is awful. I don't personally have a better one, though. Hopefully someone else will. Adam McMaster 07:29, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Bryan Adams

There's a "not to be confused with" tag at the top, but anyone else hear of/see anything about how a fan yelled "play summer of '69!" at a concert, and he threw the guy $30 and told him to get out? Zchris87v 00:45, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Yes that did happen. It was mentioned in the Trivia section before I removed it -- I'm not sure if him throwing the guy out is important enough to be mentioned by itself, but it could be added to the bio with some info about his mother's illness at the time (since that was a contributing factor to his reaction). References will be needed, of course -- I imagine NME.com or somewhere like that will have suitable reports from the time. Adam McMaster 11:03, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking along the lines of him making a music career with a similar sounding name to Bryan Adams. Obviously, he took offense to the comment, and likely would not have done so had someone just yelled "freebird". That's why I was thinking it might have been significant. Zchris87v 23:30, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

I'v never actually listened to Ryan's music but I've always thought people were talking about Bryan Adams. I can't be the only one. Cdwillis 19:50, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

He recently said in his blog that the 'fan' never yelled for a Bryan Adams song, but was just drunk and was ruining the gig for everyone else. (17th Apri) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.74.155.100 (talkcontribs) 10:44, April 17, 2008

Removed sentence

I made a relatively small edit, removing one sentence. The sentence, which followed the reference to Deadheads criticising Adams, read: "Ironically, many of the criticisms leveled by this small group involved Adams's perceived substance abuse, a dubious plea from a group that has embraced the culture of drugs and alcohol so openly." This seems to me non-objective, taking sides with Adams against the critics. It also seems slightly inaccurate. I have read many of these criticisms, and their point was that his substance abuse led to missed cues and botched lyrics at these concerts. That is different from druggies criticizing Adams for being a druggie.Djl.27182 22:10, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

2007 State Theatre Performance

Following is a section that appears to be a cut and paste from a news article: http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/28/people.ryanadams.ap/index.html

Lately

On Thursday September 27, 2007 the singer-guitarist complained about the sound monitors onstage at the State Theatre in Minneapolis. At one point, he actually moved two monitors, his microphone and his guitar pedals.

After 70 minutes he'd had enough. He announced "the last song" and didn't return for an encore. Many fans stood and booed.

Also in Minneapolis, in 2003, Adams gave a notoriously bad performance at First Avenue, a rambling two-hour show where he griped about the sound system, played several songs twice and lambasted local rock legend Paul Westerberg

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdkessler (talkcontribs) 19:55, September 28, 2007

I'm not sure that it's worth keeping the "Equipment problems" section – I don't think it's notable enough. (Look at it this way, in five or ten years who's going to care that he got angry on stage at a particular performance?) At the very least, those two paragraphs should be rewritten for neutrality and merged into the rest of the article instead of being separate. Adam McMaster 09:07, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
I have no idea what this is doing on Wikipedia. So he complained about the sound, and moved some equipment? Who cares? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.148.7.199 (talk) 15:20, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Merging bootlegs

Since many of them were tagged for deletion, I am going to merge the pages for the various bootleg recordings into the main article. I've archived the original pages for future reference and will redirect them all to the appropriate place in the article. Adam McMaster (talk) 22:48, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Bedhead

What about giving info or at least a mention of the bedhead recording and Live is Hell? 14:04, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

The problem with live bootlegs, and indeed the other bootlegs which are already mentioned in the article, is that there's very little (if any) verifiable information about any of them, so there's not much that can be said about them here. Having said that, if you can find some reliable information feel free to add it to the article. Adam McMaster (talk) 13:01, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Misc

Shorthand references to "Ryan" should be changed to "Adams." Very unprofessional. He's not your buddy.

Ryan Adams is a brilliant musician

Is there a reason that the Pinkhearts sessions were omitted from the bootleg bit?

Someone might want to consider putting something together on songs he's contributed to other artists, as Tim McGraw is doing rather well with "When The Stars Go Blue" right now (which is rather a shift from Timmy's usual style). (User:Tony Fox)

Yes, but as that cover version is absolute shit, perhaps it would be best to ingore it and hope it goes away.

Grandmother

It says in the openings paragrah that Adams was raised by his mother and grandmother. Later on we learn that his father left when he was 9 years old and his grandmother played a MODEST role. Now I know you're not grown up when you're 9 years old, but the statement still feels sort of weird/irrelevant, it's not that special. I mean it's not like his father left when he was 2 weeks old or something. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.208.184.46 (talk) 13:35, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Years Active

Currently, this implies that DRA is still actively a musician as it says 1991-present. How long do we wait until changing this to 1991-2009? I am under the impression that he has quit the music biz. DFS (talk) 14:04, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

He hasn't quit, he's said that he's just taking a break for a while. After all, he's recorded 11 albums in the past 8 years. Adam McMaster (talk) 15:23, 13 June 2009 (UTC)
I agree - there should be something more significant before his wiki reports no longer active. First, artists are never truly inactive. Second, he has been dealing with getting sober, marriage, has a disease of the inner ear, so given his past and everything, I'd say he is just taking a step back. But I've got $20 that says RA will release another CD soon. --Unclebanglin (talk) 06:21, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Fans

Apparently there's a restaurant in North Carolina that has named all of its menu items after Ryan Adams songs. Should this be added to the page? Should a section be added about this and other fan tributes? Rosestiles (talk) 12:42, 11 March 2010 (UTC)RoseStiles

That's really cool. What's the name of it? I'd like to go! --Unclebanglin (talk) 06:21, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Facebook citations

The two citations of Facebook near the end of the article are NOT a good idea, and the 2nd one deadlinked inside Facebook. I've tagged them "dubious" for now but in a week or two I will delete them. Please help improve the article by finding reliable sources, not including Facebook or MySpace, blogs, or forums. --Lexein (talk) 12:05, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Picture

Could a more recent picture of the guy be used, perhaps? One where it doesn't look like he's melting and crying in agony because he's melting? 173.49.83.201 (talk) 22:42, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

NYT allegations

Probably worth mentioning this: [1], but remember WP:BLP applies. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 23:05, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Just allegations at this point. The material has been challenged and removed. This should be discussed thoroughly and consensus achieved before it is added back. Dlohcierekim (talk) 23:33, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
Isn't there an editing regulation that recognizes something obvious? These actions seem fairly obvious with reference to the (sex, drugs, and) rock and roll industry that Mr. Adams is in, and probably warrant little comment under Wikipedia regulations. I'm not condoning it, I'm just pointing out that many many people take up a guitar as a way to meet women. Liberty5651 (talk) 00:28, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
Liberty5651 This is not a place for philosophical talking. And if you like it then i shall tell you that one shall not accuse someone without knowing everything about the matter. Ryan suffers from various problems and has suffered depression in the past which is scientifically proven to affect you for the rest of your life. If a person A proposes another person B for some kind of collective activity and B didn't resist and proceeds then they are said to land in an agreement (By international law). The exact same thing happened in his case. And for those so-called innocent girls (except Mandy), Why did they had physical relationship if their character was so flawless. Simple answer, Because they knew that they can do nothing on their own and it's not because of male dominance but their inability to be creative. Once he launched them into the industry, they got nothing to lose and accused him of sexual assault which was in fact a "consensual sex". I feel bad for Mandy but all others are cunning and betrayed a helpless person who had been suffering but still lived his life like he was normal. I won't say that he isn't at fault at all but his mischief accounts for 30% of the incident compared to the 70% of those accusers. Sorry if it hurted someone's emotion but that's the truth. From a universal servant Levent Heitmeier (talk) 17:13, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
Crikey, Levent Heitmeierit, it seems as if your comment is more philosophical talking then mine. Those are interesting numbers you're using as statistics. It would be good to know where are they from to support the truth, or to remove them to not confuse the issue. Liberty5651 (talk) 18:49, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
Liberty5651 Those stats (30%) are just for example and those laws I told you about, is a part of my studied so i know. I said all that philosophical stuff because you had already started the conversation. You too know that what I said is true and asking me to provide evidence for the statement is a waste of time of both you and me. Feminism is one thing, support of women without conscious thoughts about matter is the other. From a universal servant Levent Heitmeier (talk) 04:13, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

The published accusations include claims that Ryan Adams sabotoged careers of women who rejected his advances, so assigning shared blame (30% to Adams, 70% to women; HA!) is both denigrating and ridiculous. David notMD (talk) 13:18, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Is there an editing policy that recognizes something obvious? I'm not condoning his actions, I'm just pointing out that many many people take up a guitar as a way to meet women. It seems like a relevant fact, but I'm unfamiliar with how Wikipedia recognizes or sources general facts like that. Liberty5651 (talk) 15:09, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
When NYTimes reports, and FBI is involved, probably Wikipedia-newsworthy. David notMD (talk) 18:16, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
Is there a way to source something that seems like a fact: many teenage guys take up a guitar as a way to meet women? It seems relevant, but I'm unfamiliar with how Wikipedia recognizes or sources general facts like that. Liberty5651 (talk) 14:40, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Sadlacks

Now that they've torn the old town down, there should definitely be some mention here of Skillet and Sadlack's Heroes and old Hillsborough Street in the 90s while CHASS sat sedately across the street. 108.173.250.72 (talk) 01:03, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Is Recognition bloated

The Recognition section, created by an editor since blocked as a sockpuppet, name-drops more than a half-dozen musicians as having said nice things about Ryan Adams. In my opinion, the second paragraph: "According to some sources, Adams is a disciple of John Fogerty and has opened for him as a member of Whiskeytown at the Star Lake Amphitheatre in June 1998.[1] American author Stephen King has also professed his fandom for Adams and stated, "I won’t say Adams is the best North American singer songwriter since Neil Young…but I won’t say he isn’t either.".[2]" is weakly referenced and should be deleted. Another editor disagrees. Rather than edit-war, raising the question here. The Fogerty ref is an article about Fogerty never having played Pittsburgh. In passing, it describes Adams as a disciple of Fogerty, and opened for him once (not well received, and Adams insulted Fogerty. The second is a valid quote from Stephen King - not a musician - sort of complementing Adams. Any Adams fans want to voice an opinion here? About this? About the first paragraph? David notMD (talk) 01:34, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Mr.David notMD I think you are perceiving things in a wrong way from the very start. First of all i want to say that your nomenclature for the title of this section is well, Horrendous! (No disrespect to an experienced editor like you but this is what happens when you are friends with editors like Bonadea) Bloated? Really? It is used for fluids and well the recognition is uncomfortably short. Now, Adams didnt disrespect John. It is all about his way of talking and as the article suggests, he disrespected the audience in attendance for not giving a damn to what they were playing. Stephen may not be a musician but he is a hell of an author for America. Weakly Referenced? Wow! Then what source will be considered strong and reliable. Post Gazzette is not a blog or something. It is the one of the largest and respected newspaper servers in the whole United States. (3 Pulitzers!) And the other one is NME which is one of the most reliable source across the globe. You should really check what you are talking about David. These mistakes are unacceptable from someone like you but ofcourse these are tend to happen when you are friends with impotent and rude peoples like Bonadea. Both the contents are well-referenced and possess their own importance in contrast to the section so this debate's outcome should be pretty clear after my comment.

I say it again David, there is still time for you to learn from your mistakes, stop helping peoples like Bonadea and support those who are really working for making Wikipedia great and not themselves great by elevating their edit counts just by reverting edits and causing hinderance in the development of Wikipedia. I accept till this date that you are a nice guy even though what you did to me was really harsh. This shows that i don't give a damn about myself but surely about Wikipedia and good faith editors. Regards The Best 117.225.97.248 (talk) 06:38, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

My hope here is that other editors will comment on the relatively simple question of retaining or deleting the second paragraph of the Recognition section. Thank you. David notMD (talk) 17:00, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

I removed the Fogerty quote. It's meaningless and not an example of "Recognition" of DRA. DFS (talk) 15:40, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
