"since he sees this as the only thing that protects the world from a nuclear holocaust."

Totally the contrary. Sting talk about the hysteria seen in both parts of the world at the times. During the cold war, especially in the 80s, everybody was living in the fear of a massive nuclear holocaust. Sting is just saying that, whatever the russian or american leaders could say, no one could be dumb enough to start a war that everyone would lost. Politicians were exploiting fears at the time. We can see how much they lied, nowadays, in the 2000's. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.48.251.179 (talkcontribs) 00:01, 1 July 2007

I think you're underestimating the actual fear of nuclear holocaust that existed during the Cold War. It's only from the comfortable position of hindsight that we can look back now and say, "Oh, sure, it was just hysteria; nobody would would have been dumb enough to star a war like that." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.199.76.177 (talk) 21:21, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Sting-Russians-195605.jpg

edit

Image:Sting-Russians-195605.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Pax Americana

edit

Why was my Pax Americana analysis removed? I think it is entirely relevant and I don't see why it should be removed! Leave it alone - I'll just keep putting back.

It was, and will be, removed as uncited original research. This isn't to say that it isn't good information, but all information in Wikipedia articles must be reliably sourced and cited to meet our verifiability requirement. — pd_THOR | =/\= | 16:20, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

What NEEDS to be "cited" about it. It is MY analysis based on a direct comparison of the song with the speech. What further "citation" is required? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ddeclue (talkcontribs) 04:53, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, that's just it. Original research is not allowed.76.113.104.88 (talk) 10:40, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Video?

edit

I miss a section about the video to the single. I would be interested who that older man in the beginning of the video is. Cassandro (talk) 12:35, 21 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sergei Prokofiev

Did Sting acknowledge he was using a theme by Sergei Prokofiev ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.123.235.83 (talk) 15:04, 10 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

He clearly acknowledges Prokofiev on the covers or notes of the CD, cassette and vinyl LP versions of the album. I don't have any of the single releases of the song, so I can't check there. But on the album, at least, Sting does acknowledge Prokofiev. 72.0.15.8 (talk) 14:01, 15 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Original reserach

edit

I'm killing a large portion of the "Background" as original research.

Yes, a lot of it is "obvious". Similarly, generations of us were taught that Fahrenheit 451 is about censorship (spoiler: it isn't).

The change that started this was the correction of "there is no monopoly on common sense" to "there isn't no". While this seems to fit the sound better, it stands out like a sore thumb from Sting's projected image of a highly literate individual. While both of those wordings are possible, so is "there isn't a". Or maybe all three are wrong. There isn't no/a source in the section to support any of those choices.

The only source in that paragraph is "Russians by Sting Songfacts". First of all, the text we have is a copypaste copyright violation. Next, Songfacts is a highly problematic source, using a mixture of reliable sources, reliable interviews and user submitted material. This particular bit is from "Will - Opelika, AL". While I have no particular problem with Will -- he's either a fine person, deplorable or somewhere in between -- he does not have a reputation for fact checking and accuracy, per WP:IRS.

The rest of the paragraph is a similar grab bag of "obvious"/dubious guesswork and copying from Songfacts contributors making similar guesses. - SummerPhDv2.0 17:44, 19 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
