I don't think Rushton was initially credited for Magic Carpet Ride - initially the song was credited solely to John Kay. After recording 2 albums in a single year with Steppenwolf, Rushton was fired by John Kay and then replaced by Nick St. Nicholas[1].

Although I can't find any corroborating evidence, I was under the impression that Kay originally got the credit for MCR and only after some haggling was Rushton Moreve given credit for the music while Kay got the lyrics. "They" say if ya can't remember the 60s it's pretty good evidence you were there. A lot of it is a fog for me.

A couple of interesting things have popped up as I've researched this (all so I can learn to play the bass line of "The Pusher....rather intricate.) First, there's some conflict about the date of Moreve's death. Many web sites state his death as happening in 1981, but the official Steppenwolf site [2] states that he died in 1975.

Second (and this might just be a bit of trivia) the only statements I can find about Moreve's firing was one article stating his belief that California was going to fall into the ocean soon and he didn't wan to return there after a road trip. So he was fired and St. Nicholas took his place. This apparently happened between late 68 and sometime in 69 as the group was working on the "AT YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY" album upon which only St. Nicholas is featured.
