Insolent questions edit

So, he was expelled from Rochester for asking insolent questions. I'm surely not the only person to ask what questions? 109.153.242.97 (talk) 17:58, 11 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

The article now says this (with two sources: "However, as was reported on the front page of The New York Times at the time, he was expelled from his Ethics class in February 1924 for his 'attempted refutation of everything he had been taught' and would withdraw from the university soon after." The ODNB says this, which perhaps could be added: "... but was expelled from the philosophy class by Professor George M. Forbes, who found his questionings rude and insolent." @Martinevans123: Thank you for your last comments re Peg Symthies Bovey/Britton issue downpage. My most recent research on that was research I ought to have done and worked out how to work into the article before making the changes on the two pages. I greatly appreciate how you've handled my misteps in that regard. Belatedly, re the Rochester expulsion issue you're quite right that an edit along the lines you suggest is needed, I've not left things best explained in the main body of the article (or via the quotes I added to the references). I'll try to get both matters cleared up over the next few days. Thanks again Martin.Jy Houston (talk) 11:02, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Peg Smythies edit

@Jy Houston: many thanks for your edits. I would not dispute that her son, at pegsmythies.org, would probably know more about her surnames than most other people, but I am surprised that the ODNB would get it wrong with "Bovey". Martinevans123 (talk) 08:33, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Martinevans123: Thanks in return for your edits. My apologies, I'd forgotten (or got muddled about the fact) that you'd verified the "Bovey" details in the ODNB (which I can't access just at this moment but have previously seen) and was thinking it only said 'Bovey' in the 'Rush Rhees Archives' page at archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk. It seems rather unlikely that 'the Archives folks', ODNB and DZ Phillips (of all people) would have got this wrong yes. I was, I think, a tad hasty about (and over-tired whilst) trying to rectify what I'd taken to be errors introduced by myself onto two Wikipedia pages. I'm uncertain about how best to deal with this but am entirely happy for you to resolve it as you see fit (if you're so inclined). I ought to have raised the matter here or otherwise 'worked round it' without undoing your (two sets of) edits in any event. Sorry about that. Jy Houston (talk) 10:01, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
No worries. Yes, I'd have thought D.Z. would know what he was saying in the ODNB. That source is generally regarded as one of the best, I think. I would welcome views from any other interested editors. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:05, 29 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Martinevans123: "Peg (née Bovey)" can be found in a few other reputable sources including Prof John Hayes' newly released 'The Selected Writings of Maurice O'Connor Drury: On Wittgenstein, Philosophy, Religion and Psychiatry' (on p. 423, visible via Google Books: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=C7EvDwAAQBAJ&pg=PA423#v=onepage&q&f=false ). Hayes finished writing the latter in May 2017. In July 2018 he published a nice little journal article called "WITTGENSTEIN’S IRISH COTTAGE" [1] in which (having been in touch with Peg Smythies' son about her sketch of said cottage) he writes "Born Margaret Britton in 1924.." (along with a fair bit more about her). I'm curious to know the story behind the surnames (presumably something turned up in the family's investigations following her death in 2014 or could be publicly acknowledged after her passing) and will give a thought to how I might best make some enquiries about that. But it would seem she was indeed born with the surname Britton and that the case can be made for saying as much. Interesting stuff. Jy Houston (talk) 07:51, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for your continued diligence, Jy. It always pays to do a little research. Yes, new facts sometimes emerge after someone has passed away. Martinevans123 (talk) 09:13, 30 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Rhees books edit

maybe worth saying that apart from Without Answers (1969) and Discussions of Wittgenstein (1970) the other books 'by' him were edited by D.Z. Phillips using material from the Rhees Archive? 82.4.145.219 (talk) 12:13, 2 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

editing edit

it says 'He was also responsible for editing other works by Wittgenstein, including Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics (1956), Philosophische Bemerkungen (1964), Philosophical Remarks (1975), and Philosophical Grammar (1978).'

He jointly edited 'Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics'; he edited 'Philosophische Bemerkungen'(which IS the 'Philosophical Remarks'!) and the 'Philosophical Grammar' himself. 82.4.145.219 (talk) 13:17, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

How would you re-phrase this? And how come we have two dates for 'Philosophical Remarks? I would have assumed 1964 was the German language edition and 1975 the English. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:32, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
correct. re-phrase it any way you like! 82.4.145.219 (talk) 15:20, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you think the text is wrong, please provide a corrected version. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:15, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Together with Wittgenstein's other executors G.E.M Anscombe and G.H. von Wright he was co-editor of Wittgenstein's posthumous Philosophical Investigations (1953), and Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics (1956); he was solely responsible for the editing of Philosophical Remarks (1975) and Philosophical Grammar (1978). 82.4.145.219 (talk) 17:24, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks. I will add. I wonder does that need any supporting source(s)? Martinevans123 (talk) 17:48, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
no idea, i'm new to this... 82.4.145.219 (talk) 17:55, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ok, no worries. I have adjusted the lead section. But it looks like the later section, on Edited works, also needs to be updated, and sources added. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:03, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Image edit

that Rhees Archives photo is rather ropey! i think it dates from when it was in the phil dept, rather than in the archives themselves? 82.4.145.219 (talk) 15:49, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

That one seems to be the only one that has been uploaded. If you know of any other copyright-compliant image(s), by all means upload. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:17, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
i don't know how to upload an image...i have a scan of Rhees from a photo of the Moral Science club at Cambridge 1936 (from the Nedo 'Wittgenstein: Sein Leben in Bildern und Texten' (1983) p266) which might be a change from the one that's usually used! 82.4.145.219 (talk) 19:53, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
If you signed up as a user (takes about 30 seconds) you'd have easy access to WP:File_Upload_Wizard. But I'm no copyright expert, so we might have to check the rights attached to a 1936 image in Michael Nedo's 1983 book. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:01, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
also have photo of the gravestone without the bird shit... 82.4.145.219 (talk) 20:09, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
How lovely. This one could be slightly "repaired" if need be. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:15, 3 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
