I think the lead of this article could be tightened up, it's a bit wordy and the paragraphs don't always tie together well. If there are no objections, I'm going to try to organize it better.

Major Rewrite edit

I replaced the page with a substantial rewrite and expansion that I've been working on. The draft with the edit history is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Proper_Stranger/Robert_Sheaffer There is more that could be added, but I have not found good sources, and as anyone can see by that edit history I've been sitting on this for too long and wanted to get it up. There is an RfC on the question of using "Religion: None" vs. "Religion: None (atheist)" in the infobox on this and other similar pages.

The RfC is at Template talk:Infobox person#RfC: Religion infobox entries for individuals that have no religion.
