Copyvios? edit

I don't have time, but if someone else does, could they check this page for (major) copyvios. The first edit made on the page in 2004 pretty much added the entire article (as it is today?). In other words, it looks suspiciously copyvio-ish. Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 17:41, 26 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I haven't had any luck in locating that text elsewhere online. Per WP:AGF, my guess would be it was prepared offline in a text editor or word processing program. -- Visviva (talk) 00:06, 3 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Quotes edit

I'm moving the "quotes" section here. In their current state, they were an unencyclopedic list of trivia, basically, and many of them were uncited. However, several of them could reasonably be worked into an appropriate section of the article and cited.– DroEsperanto(talk|contribs)

  • The whole apparatus of football, fraternities, and fun is a means by which education is made palatable to those who have no business in it.
  • Our universities have become "high-class flophouses where parents send their children to keep them off the labor market and out of their own hair." (1954, qtd. in Martin Gardner, The Night is Large)
  • Martin Gardner: "Word spread around the country that the University of Chicago was a former Baptist school where Jewish professors were now teaching Catholic theology to atheists." A variant of this quote is that "the University of Chicago is a Baptist institution where atheistic professors teach Jewish students about St. Thomas Aquinas."
  • Hutchins, who eliminated intercollegiate athletics at the University of Chicago (formerly a member of the Big 10), is reported to have said, "Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until the urge passes." This quote appears to originate in a 1939 profile of Hutchins written by J. P. McEvoy.[1]
  • "A world community can only exist with world communication, which means something more than extensive shortwave facilities scattered about the globe. It means common understanding, a common tradition, common ideas and common ideals."-Hutchins
  • If the GI Bill is passed, "colleges and universities will find themselves converted into educational hobo jungles."
  • "The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment."-Hutchins
