Mushrooms

Recently an anonymous editor added the fact that Bob Machol possessed an exceptionally large collection of books about mushrooms and fungi; this was reverted shortly afterward, with the comment "not likely."

Unlikely it may have been, but it was nevertheless true. Machol was a well-known, even a famous expert on fungi. I have no citation, but the memorial column at OR/MS Today does allude to this: "Bob Machol's life involved a number of strands—aviation, scientific writing, systems engineering, chemistry, research, applying OR to sports, computing and mushrooms...".

Moreover, Google Scholar search for Machol will turn up his contributions to fungal taxonomy in Taxon, the journal of the International Association for Plant Taxonomy.

I mention this here to prevent any further reversions.

Google scholar also reveals his book Bayesian Analysis of Generic Relations in Agaricales. I don't know why this isn't in the Library of Congress catalog. -- Dominus 02:56, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Source Updates

The original Wiki on Robert E. Machol, which was writed by someone else, was updated on 28 March 2008. The sources used for the update were material supplied by his wife, which included a complete resume through 1990,the public sources on Machol,(including Google), and personal knowledge about him and his work. I first met him in 1951, worked with him from 1952 to 1955, and then again from 1960 to 1962. We maintained contact until his death. I can vouch for his mushrom hobby. I remember my wife and I going on mushroom hunts with him in Ann Arbor where he started his mushroom book collection.
