Origin of name edit

The River Skerne is said to have been originally called the "Shining River". This may be of British/Celtic origin, however its original name may be more connected to Skirne a messenger of the gods in Angle, Saxon & Scandanavian pagan mythology. There's a town and river of that name, presently on the West coast of Jutland in Denmark.

The River Skerne is joined in central Darlington by the Cocker Beck, which flows through the denes, a mile long string of urban parks that extend to the village of Cockerton and beyond into the West.

Once rural Cockerton was the alleged site of the imaginary Cockerton Docks, a skit from the then bigger & heavily industrialised neighbour Darlington. (a'la Wigan Pier).
