Re: McKinney De-Canonization

I know I'm not alone among Robotech fans in saying that if Shadow Chronicles greatly diverges from the story put forth by McKinney, then it had better be a damn GOOD story or I will continue to ignore it. The reason so many fans like McKinney's novels despite their "de-canonification" is because they make good stories and offer a lot of believable insight into the motives and thoughts of the characters.

And personally, I don't understand why Harmony Gold would license the McKinney books and then turn around and say we're now supposed to forget about them. They ought to have more respect for their fans than that. It's kind of like how Rick Berman and Brannon Braga threw out thirty years of established Star Trek universe lore, much of it approved by Roddenberry and Fontana, to create the completely different world of Star Trek: Enterprise. Playing fast and loose with the established world of your story is an excellent way to offend your audience and destroy suspension of disbelief.

Style

The writing style of this entry doesn't seem appropriate for Wikipedia -- there's an in-universe rather than out-of-universe approach. There's no reference to the character's appearances in other media. In contrast, the entry for the Macross analogue to the character, Hikaru Ichijyo, is written in a style more consistent with Wikipedia standards.FixerMX 19:36, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Stop with the Macross already

Oppose merge - I am removing all merge suggestions for any Robotech character involved. I agree that Robotech character descriptions should include links to any character descriptions from the original source material. After all, they do share the animation. However, the fact is that Robotech as a story concept and development is completely different from its source material. It's time to end the confusion between them. Merge

This is just silly. Hikaru Ichijyo and Rick Hunter have different names, but are still basically the same character. We need sections detailing the respective aspects of the character and how they are different, not seperate articles. My main case in point is Lynn Minmay; the one character whose name doesn't change and−surprise, surprise−doesn't have seperate articles. Given that Macross and its many sequels far outnumber Robotech in volume, popularity and predate it chronologically, if anything the Rick Hunter article should be a subset of the Hikaru Ichijyo article, not vice-versa. The Rick Hunter character was only based upon the original Macross character, and any information or references within the later chapters of Robotech are complete fabrications on the part of Western writers and authors. It's rather condescending and insulting to the fully-realized and developed japanese Macross franchise to treat it as a subsidiary of Robotech in any sense. 74.210.71.26 (talk) 21:08, 18 May 2008 (UTC)
