I've gone for the inclusive horseman rather than horse trainer. He was not notable as a jockey, but he did ride in both the Derby and the Grand National, which was pretty unusual.
The apparent disagreement over the date of his retirement in the sources can be explained if you consider that although he retired at the end of 1924, his retirement presentation would probably have been in the following spring. Tigerboy1966 22:00, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
