Inconsistent year of birth edit

In the header it says Gadd was born in 1990, in the text it's 1989. 95.90.241.241 (talk) 06:20, 27 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Writing quality edit

Someone with more experience of Wikipedia and more time than I have needs to sort out this mess. For the first time ever I've got two different versions of the same page at the same time from the Internet because the other window is proxied elsewhere.

On both versions (Gadd/Gadd's or He/His appears in the same place) and in poor form at the opening of four of the six paragraphs that comprise the piece. 94.196.244.3 (talk) 21:47, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Pictures edit

Why don't some articles, like this one have pictures of the person? GamerKlim9716 (talk) 02:46, 4 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Typically, it is because the photos must be public domain or copyright-released to appear here. If you are inspired, you should search for a photo of Gadd that meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and add it. WmLawson (talk) 17:05, 13 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Its all explained in WP:IUPC. Images of famous people like Gadd are usually copyrighted photos from newspapers, magazines etc. However, people like this are sometimes photographed at fan conventions or in public, so you'd have to wait for someone to take a freely licenced photo of him, or take one yourself. Date of Birth again edit

There is an ongoing conflict about the year of birth. In these sources, it states 1990: The Courier (no note on the perennial sources noticeboard either way), The Cinemaholic (no note on the perennial sources noticeboard either way), Screen Rant (perennial sources noticeboard notes the source is "marginally reliable"), and a humorous YouTube video on himself showing a board with a 1990 birthday, which is likely considered WP:BLPSELFPUB.

In contrast, several sources say his DOB is in 1989, including: OK via Yahoo! Life (no note on the perennial sources noticeboard regarding OK but Yahoo! News is generally reliable), Instinct magazine (no note on perennial sources noticeboard either way), BOL News (no note on the perennial sources noticeboard either way), and inews (no note on the perennial sources noticeboard either way).

These are just a few examples; I'm sure there are more sources on both sides. Considering it is a WP:BLP, until there is consensus over a birth date, I feel it should be left off of the article or multiple dates should be listed in accordance with WP:DOB. Wikipedialuva (talk) 11:08, 17 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I added two birth years, as every source I have seen notes that it is either 1989 or 1990; this does not seem to be in dispute; only the precise year is. WP:DOB dictates that "if multiple independent reliable sources state differing years or dates of birth in conflict, include all birth dates/years for which a reliable source exists, clearly noting discrepancies. In this situation, editors must not include only one date/year which they consider "most likely", or include merely a single date from one of two or more reliable sources." I used what are likely the two most reliable sources from the sources in the previous post, one that was made by OK! and published via Yahoo! Life and Screen Rant (the perennial sources noticeboard notes the source as "marginally reliable"). If someone is able to locate a definitive WP:RS, I do not object to changing it. After more research, I was able to find a source that the perennial sources noticeboard finds "generally reliable" and has some insight into his age: The Independent. In the 8 October 2019 article "Richard Gadd: 'I can’t emphasis enough how much of a victim my stalker is'" by Alexa Pollard[1], it notes that at the time of writing, he was 30 years old; it does not give his precise birth date, however. I believe this should allow for, at a minimum, the use of "Template:Birth based on age as of date". I think one could debate over whether the other sources stating a different date of birth are reliable enough to invoke the WP:DOB policy of including them when the only "generally reliable" source states he is 30, and if so, should it be noted in the opening paragraph and infobox or perhaps in the "Early life and education" section. If they are not reliable enough, we must rely on the only "generally reliable source" unless another one is found.
Which then leads to the next question: do we have a source, or sources, that are reliable enough to post a day and month of birth? While, as noted, sources of his birth date dispute the year, nearly all of them do list a month and day and agree that it is May 11. If we assume that his day and month of birth are May 11, and he was 30 in October 2019, by performing WP:CALC, we arrive at a birth date of 11 May 1989.
For the time being, and considering this is an extremely heavily viewed BLP article, I feel the most prudent move is to rely on the most reliable source we have in the meantime (using the 2019 The Independent article with a "birth based" template) until consensus is reached on how to handle the birthdate issue. I will also go ahead and post a link to this on the BLP noticeboard. Wikipedialuva (talk) 06:52, 18 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Wikipedialuva Unable to devote a significant amount of time to this at the moment, but ran across this Vanity Fair interview which states he was 34 at the time of the interview.
Awshort (talk) 19:50, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Awshort: Thanks for adding the Vanity Fair article; it's a very valuable addition. We now have two generally reliable sources (The Independent and now Vanity Fair) that say he was born in 1989, assuming he was born on May 11. If we can reach consensus that he was born on May 11, we have a complete birth date: 11 May 1989. I think if one really wanted to, one could argue WP:DOB for including both birthdates in the article, but that is not necessarily a priority to me at the moment as much as getting the date we are going to use for the lead and infobox.
In regards to May 11, while I have not found a source that has been established as "generally reliable" by the perennial sources noticeboard that states May 11, there are several sources that I feel would likely qualify as WP:RS. This is in addition to every single source that discusses or mentions a full date of birth, which seems to be in total agreement that May 11 is the correct day and month. Wikipedialuva (talk) 23:55, 20 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Wikipedialuva I just started skimming through a few sources and all of those that mention a DOB use 11 May 1989, and although none that I saw are what I would regard as high-quality sources (and may all have used the imdb date), I think that there are enough "passable" sources to justify inclusion of this date. A few other things though - as far as I can see, the first source cited doesn't give it at all; there seems to be a descrepancy in his middle names (Craig/Robert); and neither DOB nor YOB is mentioned in the body. I usually follow WP:LEADFOLLOWSBODY and keep all citations in the body. Laterthanyouthink (talk) 12:58, 21 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
