The old page lacked any sources since 2014. While it pains me to delete the well-written old version, the new one is at least cited.

A rare sugar is a sugar that occurs in very small quantities in nature. Typically they occur in amounts too small to allow for economic separation from their underlying natural source and are typically made through biological processes such as fermentation or enzyme conversion to create the identical compound.
