Maybe I'm nitpicking, but as I understand it, in the U.S. in the 1860s, the rank of admiral didn't exist. It was "flag officer". Trekphiler 13:16, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

- Just for the sake of clarification (and in the interest of being less bitchy than I was above), I believe the rank of Rear Admiral was created early on during the Civil War, while the rank of Admiral (that is, "full" Admiral) was indeed a post-War creation.
