• Possibly genealogy to follow up. Though care is needed, as always, with such things. Starting point would be to confirm the exact birth and death dates in the JSTOR obituary recently added to the external links.
• 1881 Wollaston Fund (from the GSL)
• FORMER FELLOWS OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF EDINBURGH. 1783-2002 has lots of details, including place of burial. See page 941 of that document. Also confirms he was a fellow of the RSE.
• Small amount here, probably better sourced from elsewhere
• This is an obituary, but not sure which journal it is from. (See below: from the Geological Magazine)
• Details of Fellowship of Royal Society can be looked up as well (done: nothing much extra there)
• Was made LLD of the University of Edinburgh in around 1893
• Elected FGS in 1874 - see here.
• See also here. This is a book called 'Men and Women of the Time' by George Washington Moon, and published in 1891. Has an entry for Traquair. Includes a mention of the 'Lords of the Committee of Council on Education' (early form of the Education Ministry) which explains the references elsewhere to the appointments in Dublin and Edinburgh being 'government' appointments. Also lists some of his main papers to that date.

• This is a blog, but may be of passing interest (it names a fossil fish he named).
• See here for election in 1859 (still at university) to the Royal Physical Society of Edinburgh. Also, this result suggests an election to a geological society in 1874. The publication is from the Edinburgh Geological Society, but have been unable to find date for FGS, which should refer to the London GS, but maybe he was fellow of both. For more on the RPSE and Traquair's role and a pointer to a book he wrote on its early history, see here.
• The Neill Prize and Makdougall-Brisbane Prize citations can be found in 'Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Volume 9, 1878' and 'Proceedings, Volume 23, Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1902' respectively. Citation for the Lyell Medal would also be good.
• The Swiney Lecture was for graduates of Edinburgh University. See here. It should be possible to cite each lectureship award and the series of lectures he gave in each of the ten years.
• Retirement was (in part at least) due to an age limit. See here.

Thank-you. Can you tell by the "jid=GEO" bit in the URL? Is there a way to extract a full citation for it, including the year? Ah, I see, I need to go here. Should be able to get the details there and maybe a better link as well. What I'd also like to do is get a photo of the headstone on his grave in Colinton. Yes, "jid=GEO" means Geological Magazine (I suspected it would be the Geological Magazine, went to their site, found a link to some free articles, and looked at the "jid" value in the URLs). Maybe Findagrave would have a picture of the headstone? DuncanHill (talk) 21:05, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Source inconsistencies

• The Who Was Who source gives a death date of 24 November 1912, rather than 22 November 1912 as stated in the ODNB article. Since the latter uses as one of its sources his death certificate, I'm staying with that one. The Who Was Who entry also states that the Lyell Medal was 1902, rather than 1901. Again, I'm staying with what the Geological Society of London say on their own website, and double-checking the Who Was Who bits.

• The RSE source gives different names and dates for the prizes it awarded, but as they are the awarding institution, I went with what they said, rather than the slightly different names and dates given in Who Was Who.
