References edit

He seems to be listed in Wikipedia as a known spy (de:Liste bekannter Spione und Geheimdienstmitarbeiter), but is there a reference for any CIA contacts (other than allegedly destroyed Stasi files). I found some indirect references suggesting that he had mentioned something himself - but nothing I would be happy to use as a reference. --Boson 20:34, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

In this article, paragraph 6 of "DDR-Opposition bis 1989", it is said that: Eppelmann had contacts to federal German CDU-, FDP- and SPD-members as well as foreign journalists. Among those, there were informants of western secret services like the CIA. Especially the West German newspaper "taz" [...] continously reported about activities of GDR civil rights activists. Don't know if that's enough reference, especially since its in German, but other than that, the only thing known is that this information has been removed from Stasi-archives before opening in 1990. The swiss newspaper "Blick" reported in 1997 in this article (middle of "Ein Blick zurück"): Rainer Eppelmann, now member of the Bundestag, was surprised about missing his contacts to the CIA when looking through his Stasi dossier. That hints at himself pointing it out. I've added these to the text, unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any literature on this in English. -Bundesamt 19:30, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Of course, having contact with the CIA or CIA operatives doesn't - in itself - make one a spy. This needs more substantial backing if one were to classify him as such -Ilja 09:30, 21 april 2007 (UTC)
