69 MHz FM

87.112.7.171 says, 'According to some websites Radio First Termer broadcast on "69 MHz FM" but this is highly unlikely as American radios dont recieve this frequency.' I see from 87.112.7.171's other contributions, that he know a thing or two about radios.

However, in Vietnam War Pirate DJ Dave Rabbit Has Finally Come Forward Dave Rabbit says, 'Since we were going to be broadcasting in FM, we had a full dial to choose from to use as our broadcast frequency so I picked my favorite number 69.'

While American radios may generally not have a 69 frequency, these were military radios, and it was 35 years ago, so perhaps these ones did?

Possibly although its more likely that the actual frequency was 96.9 or 106.9 but they announced it as "sixty nine megacycles" ??

Ironically 69 WAS used as a Broadcast frequency in the Soviet Bloc (Western FM radios tune 87.6-107.9 MHz but the old USSR standard was 65-74 MHz So RFT might possibly have had an audience in North Vietnam ????

Of course Military communications recievers would probably have been able to recieve 69 MHz without much difficulty but Its rather unlikely that EVERY GI in Saigon had access to one (particularly during "off duty" hours). Its far more likely that they had ordinary consumer radios in their barracks with communications sets issued to those who actually had a need for one.

But in fairness a lot of this is speculation maybe someone who was actually there can clear it up for us 87.112.5.104 23:40, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

One of the main field radios in Vietnam was the AN/PRC-25, and later the AN/PRC-77. Both of these manpack radios received frequencies from 30MHz to 80MHz, so 69MHz was no problem. As for access, these radios were ubiquitous amongst the field troops. Every squad had *at least* one... they were mounted in vehicles, barracks, boats, aircraft... anywhere one might need to call or be called by the grunts out in it... Opie and Anthony (talk show) reference discussion

This discussion aired about 60 minutes into the Opie and Anthony show (CBS Radio broadcast) airing on February 20, 2008.

Opie (Gregg Hughs) claims to have a good quality "tape" of the show and it's played and discussed.

Further discussion and replay of the tapes was had on February 21, 2008 at about 20 minutes into the show. At approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, they interview Dave Rabbit regarding Radio First Termer.

Unfortunately, none of the O&A back-catalogue is available for legitimate public download at this time; however, the episode in question could be found online by the intrepid searcher. This makes doing a proper citation difficult.

As far as tapes go, I did at one time have a good quality cassette version of this show I obtained from a friend. While not perfect, the quality was better than what has been posted online. If memory serves, the friend got it from someone who had a reel-to-reel copy of it, which would explain the higher quality. How the reel-to-reel was obtained is something I don't know, but it's possible it was actually made at the time (I got the tapes in the late 1980s, and the friend I got them from had obtained them maybe five years prior).
