Ancient word? edit

Isn't it also the modern Irish word for king? Jdorney (talk) 11:06, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, and that's what it says! DinDraithou (talk) 14:07, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah so it does. Worded a little confusingly though imo. Wouldn't it make more sense though to say that "ri is the Irish word for king, derived from the Old Irish ri, cognate with the Scottish Gaelic righ", or something like that? Jdorney (talk) 16:55, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm not responsible for the original wording right there. Yes, it should probably be reworded to say the Scottish rìgh comes from the genitive of the original. They are not really cognates but belong to different dialects of the same language which are still mutually intelligible to a degree. I'll try to get around to it and maybe find a source for when the Scots made the small change. DinDraithou (talk) 17:12, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good. Jdorney (talk) 18:37, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

hierarchy of "kings"? edit

there are several 'equations' in the article: "A rí benn (king of peaks), or rí tuaithe (king of a single tribe)" and "A ri buiden (king of bands), also ri tuath (king of [many] tribes) or ruiri (overking)". could you please prove those equations with citations or arguments. thanks.

I would deem the following ranking resp. assignments more plausible (using the categories of elman service and others): band / lineage (ramage) [biological ancestor] - (big) family chief, rí benn "king of peaks" > clan [mythical ancestor] - big man, rí buiden: "king of bands" > small or basic tribe (consiting of mostly two [or more] clans [moieties]) - small chief, rí tuaithe: "king of a single tribe" > big tribe (union or federation of small tribes) - chief(dom), big chief, duke/herzog, ri tuath: "king of [many] tribes" or ruiri : "lesser king" > nation / state - king (in the usual sense of the word)/könig, rí ruirech: "high-king". I'd like to know your opinion. HilmarHansWerner (talk) 20:09, 14 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

How is it to be pronounced? edit

And if the answer is not (/raɪ/), does that mean that the end of the name Athenry is a corruption? Harfarhs (talk) 11:48, 12 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
