Please note: the correct cite for Vt. Agency of Natural Res. v. United States ex rel. Stevens, is 529 U.S. 765 NOT 529 U.S. 756 (minor transposition of the page cite).

This law seems not to exist anywhere outside of the United States, yet corruption exists everywhere else if not more so. I find this hard to accept since laws -- particularly successful ones -- are often copied into other countries. Can anyone find an explanation? Goatchurch 16:36, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Private attorney general

I propose that what is accurate about private attorney general be merged here into qui tam, and, possibly, another article be created about the "Private Attorney General" (usually capitalized) concept used by Sovereign Citizens (also usually capitalized). — Arthur Rubin (talk) 16:16, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

A point of information: in the common law outside the US, there is an old but still living concept called a relator action, by which a private citizen can commence an action in the name of the A-G. For some discussion see G A Flick, ‘Relator Actions: The Injunction and the Enforcement of Public Rights’ (1978) 5 Monash U L Rev 133. Relator actions are also usually discussed in textbooks on administrative law. I mention this because it is a common law version of acting as private attorney general (ie it does not depend on any statutory authority) and I believe that it conceptually separate from the idea of a qui tam action, even though the ideas overlap (it seems that qui tam actions in the US are styled "ex rel" which means "at the relation of"). In the Commonwealth, relator actions are not used for criminal prosecutions but have been used, for example, to force charitable trustees to fulfil their obligations.
