Recent additions (Gender Identity) edit

Folks, if you're going to add to Wikipedia articles, you can't just hit "edit this page" and start typing. You need to cite verifiable sources. I reverted the changes, not because they are incorrect, but because they are without sources. Unsourced statements degrade the quality of an article. Specifically, nobody bothered to find a source for the assertion of questioning as applying to gender identity. They not only put that in there, but they renamed the article to better fit the unsourced claim! That's no good. It sounds reasonable that questioning might be used to apply to gender identity; so it ought to be easy to find sources to support the statements. Joie de Vivre 14:40, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, so yes it would be better with sources, but is a lack of sources really such a horror that you need to decimate an otherwise informative article? What's wrong with just adding a Fact tag like is done elsewhere?
But in response to your annoyance over lack of sources, I googled, and have sources!
  • GQ: Gender Questioning - page[1], PDF[2]
  • "GenderQueer, Trans, and Gender Questioning Youth Group" - [3]
  • Resources for Gender-Nonconforming Children and Trans-Identified and Questioning Youth and Their Allies - [4]
  • Let’s talk trans: A resource for trans and questioning youth - PDF[5], google html cache[6]
  • "Trans Prom: for transgender and gender non-confirming people and their allies" - [7]
Now, unless you have any other major issues, can be go back to building a modern responsive encyclopedia, rather than just deleteing things we don't have personal experience of? --Myfanwy 16:14, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
OK. I am having a problem with your last sentence; I see it as a personal attack. My reasoning is that I am almost certain that you do not know anything about the extent of my personal experience, so I feel it is inappropriate to accuse me of "not having personal experience" and accuse me of that being the reason I deleted. I thought I gave a careful explanation above. I would like to discuss this with you but it will be difficult if you make personal comments. Would you please try to be more careful?
It is possible that this is a simple case of differing editing styles. Related to this are the concepts of Inclusionism and Deletionism. I tend to be very strict on the necessity of including sources. Not all editors feel that way. However, the core policies of Wikipedia do stress the necessity of sources on all content (WP:V and WP:OR), so I try hard to uphold these.
I am not really keen on use of the fact tag in general because it is often used to mean "we don't have a source for this... someone else should take care of it". However you have provided many sources above so you ought to have no trouble working in the content as you see fit. Joie de Vivre 23:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Renaming from Q~ (sexuality & gender) to Q~ (LGBT) edit

I think this is a mistake based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the subject concept. First and foremost, Questioning is not a concept restricted to LGBT people (or people who will later go on to identify as LGBT). Many (if not a majority of) straight cisgendered people will go through at least one period of Questioning during their youth. Also, Questioning is not a one-way process, people don't just go from straight-cisgendered to LGBT, they can go the other way too! (Although admittedly in the current prevailent social climate, where everyone is socialised from birth as straight and cisgendered this is less common.)

And secondly, to 'other' this concept by specificly labelling it "LGBT", harks too much of labelling it "not straight" or "not normal". Just because heteronormative (straight and cisgendered) is the most common state, that doesn't give it a moral authority or precident above other states. And nor should we give credence to that belief, accidentally or otherwise. --Myfanwy 16:14, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

The main reason I moved the page was that long phrases are discouraged as parenthetical disambiguation phrases, as are special characters (such as the "&" character) in article names. However, longer phrases are not prohibited outright, and you raise a good point that that people can start from any sexuality or gender identity when they begin "questioning", and they can move in any direction. How would you feel about moving the article to Questioning (sexuality and gender)? Joie de Vivre 23:04, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Value of Referencing Statements edit

I'm not sure I see the value of statements like "Some LGBT university student groups include the term "questioning" in their literature." "Questioning" is a pretty common term, and it is used in lots of places where people discuss sexuality and sexual development, particularly in relation to LGBT youth. Statements like the above seem to imply that Questioning is somehow unique to that particular sub-group. At best, it seems like begging for recognition... Sort of a "yes, people do too use this term, right here!" Is there another way to get at whatever the point of including that statement was? (Though in general, this article seems under-sourced. I'd think that adding some additional references and external links might accomplish the same thing less awkwardly?) -- Kelsied 10:01, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Expanding the Adolescent and other youths heading, adding subheadings and expanding on those topics edit

I've done some major contributions to the Adolescent and other youths heading by adding subheadings and expanding on those topics. To prevent any conflicts, I'd like to share it here first through my sandbox before editing on the actual article. Here is the link to my sandbox:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Aileenerchoi/sandbox

Please have a look and provide constructive feedback, I will do my best to correct any mistakes before contributing it to the article. I should be clear also that I will only be adding, and not deleting texts that are existing on the page already.

Thanks a bunch!
